Annie Watson born 1893
« on: Saturday 21 October 06 18:04 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about my grandmother Annie Watson. She was born on 30 JUN 1893, her father was Thomas, she married James KITCHEN in Wakefield in 1916.

Any information about her and her family would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Could this be her in 1901?  What was her father's occupation on the marriage certificate?

This Thomas age 30 and Mary age 23 were at 7 Slate Street, Middlesbrough in 1891.  He was a gas fitter.

RG12/ 4008; Folio 46; Page 25

The only way to be sure of Mary's surname is by the birth certificate of one of the children, but picking up on the middle initial P, there is an interesting marriage for a Thomas Pressick Watson to a Mary Ann Nimmo December qtr 1890 Middlesbrough 9d 1110.

Hello MaryA,

This Thomas was a coal miner, my grandma told he was killed at the pit but I do not know where it was. It was a big family with 12 or more kids or so I was told.

Help this helps and thanks for your help already.

As you can imagine Annie Watson isn't an uncommon name but this was the one who turned up, right age and right named father, so if it's wrong then you are going to need more details to search with.

There are two suggestions I'd like to make, firstly since you have the exact date of birth and father's name you can order her birth certificate online at www.gro.gov.uk and this will give you her mother's name also, including maiden name and where they were living at the time of her birth, remember to specify the father's name.  Also you can search the index of the 1901 census for yourself at http://www.1901censusonline.com/ and if you see an entry which you think might be correct then you can ask again for a look up.

Thank you,

I've visited the web site, but you need an index number to be able to order a birth certificate before 1900.

The only other information I have about my Annie Watson is that she is a twin, but her twin died in infancy, so in a record of births there would be two babies of the same age, that ought to narrow it down.

Thanks again,

Sunny Boy,

Could your grandmother have been born in 1892?  On Free BMD there are the following entries for Huddersfield:

In Sep Q 1892 Annie Watson and Herbert Watson share the same birth ref: 9a 382 implying they were twins.

In Dec Q 1892 there is a death entry for Herbert age 0 ref: 9a 258

Dec Q 1883 Thomas Watson and Elizabeth Ann Johnson share a marriage ref: 9a 555.

In 1900 there is a death for Thomas Watson age 70  ???

On 1901 census there is a household headed by Elizabeth A Watson age 39

with son Thomas Wm age 14
daughter Annie age 8
son Jno Wm age 2

All born Huddersfield

The ref is RG13 4105 54 10 - someone on here may be able to look up the full details for you.

If someone could find Elizabeth and son Thomas in 1891 it might show her husband as well (hopefully also Thomas).

I hope this helps.

Thank you Pinetree,

Although I have 1893 as her year of birth it could be a year or two either way.

I do not remember the place Huddersfield being mentioned, I remember places like, Normanton, Pontefract, and Cutsyke.

Her father was Thomas, who was a miner, he died in a pit accident, and she did have a brother called Thomas.

I do not know if her twin was a boy or girl.

I do not know her mothers name.

Annie married James KITCHEN in Wakefield in 1916, I've ordered a copy of the marriage certificate but I don't know if it can tell me any more.

Thanks again,

This is the entry for the ref given by Pinetree
1 Roebricks Turn, Upperhead Row, Huddersfield
Elizabeth A Watson Head M 39 Rug Weaver Yorks Huddersfield
Thomas W Son S 14 Cafe Errand Boy               " "
Annie daur 8                                                  " "
John Wm Son 2                                             " "

In 1891 the only child that matches young Thomas for age and birthplace and coincidentally has the same middle initial, is

6 Deighton Road, Huddersfield
Thomas Watson Head M 29 Coachman Gardener Yorkshire Huddersfield
Ann E Wife M 29                                                             " "
Thomas W Son 4                                                             " "
Florrie daur 1                                                                  " "
RG12/ 3573; Folio 72; Page 51

To support this there is a death of Florrie Watson March qtr 1898 Huddersfield 9a 259 aged about 8 years old which is why she wouldn't show up on the 1901 census.

Of course with this occupation this may again not be your family but you are going to have to start somewhere with some facts and I would suggest that either you go with Pinetree's discovery of the twins entry and obtain the birth certificate for Annie and/or Herbert and confirm whether you believe it is your Annie - given the birthday the quarter would be right, even if the year is one out from what you originally throught.  Alternatively you can search the BMD images yourself at http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx to see whether you can find another set of twins around the appropriate time.
