Whatever happened to Ann and John
« on: Friday 20 October 06 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone

I am trying to track down John and Ann Robson in 1871 onwards.  John Robson married Ann Pinkney in 1859 in Durham Western(not got cert yet so not sure exactly where)
John was born 1836 Crawleyside, Durham
Ann was born 1837 Tudhoe

I have them in 1861 in Byer's Green, Durham but have been unable to find them after that.

It's possible, I suppose, that they left the country.  If so where can I look? How can I find out?

Appreciate any help.

Thank you

Susan  ;)

No sorry.

It may be co-incidence but I've just realised that Ann's sister Mary and her husband Thomas Wearmouth are similarly missing from all but the 1861.  Thomas and Mary appear in 1861 in Tudhoe with their two children John (b 1859) and Ann (b1860).

I wonder if the two families took the plunge together and emigrated?

Do you have any occupation for John?

I can find one John / Ann couple on 1881. The John is a coal miner and their address is Lizzey Colliery. The places of birth are not identical, but are Durham, I dont know the area at all to know if they are nearby.
It is RG11 4947 91 42.

Hi Susan

Not having much luck!!

There is this entry in 1871.  Birthplaces don't match - in fact the only thing it's got going for it is that all of the children are less than 10 years old.

RG10/4960  Folio 39  Page 54
95 Burnhope, Holmside, Durham

John ROBSON Head Mar 35 Coalminer Durham Ebchester
Ann ROBSON Wife Mar 34 Durham Dipton
Mary Jane ROBSON Daur 9 Durham Tanfield
John William ROBSON Son 7 Durham Tanfield
Hannah ROBSON Daur 5 Durham Tanfield
Thos ROBSON Son 3 Durham Burnhope

I can give you Ann PINKNEY in 1851 if you don't have it.

Rootschat have a board about emigrants - I'm sure someone will give you advice if you post a query there.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your replies

In 1861 John was a railway stoker.  I had also seen the couple you've spotted in 1871 and 1881.  They are a possible - the birthplaces aren't right but Ebchester and Crawleyside are not too far apart.  I have a lot of family born in Tudhoe and none of them have ever given anything except Tudhoe as a place of birth so Dipton as Ann's birthplace just doesn't feel right.  I think the only way to confirm that it is them would be to find baptism or births for one of the children.  The more I think of it the more I think that's my next move.

Thanks Vicar's wife for the info about the marriage  ;)

I'll let you know if I find anything.

Thanks again to you all   :D

Actually have just checked where Crawleyside is (funny how your childhood memory lets you down sometime) and its really quite a long way from Ebchester.  :-\

Will still check the children though  ;)
