1861 census lookup please- William Pine
« on: Friday 20 October 06 11:03 BST (UK) »
hi there :).

i wonder if some clever people could help me with my great great grandfather William Pine. he was born in 1842 in Corscombe Dorset, and emigrated to NZ in 1865 i'm lead to believe.
i have found him at home with his parents Luke and Frances in the 1851, but have lost him in 1861. he could be anywhere, as 1 if not 2 of his brothers where in Wales by the 1861 census.
i would love to know where he is on census night if thats possible, before he heads off downunder!.

any help greatly appreciated,
kiwirach.

apologies in advance if you already have this info. I've had a good look for William but can't see him. I can see younger sister Eliza as a boarder (school?)
RG9/1362 folio 45 pg 9, George is in Pembrey RG9/4115 folio 21 pg 10, and Jonathan is at RG9/1362 folio 9 pg 11. As Jonathan had taken over from his father as relieving officer and registrar(good man!), I began to wonder if Luke had died so had a look through the GRO death index and found
Frances Pine mar qtr 1860 Beaminster vol 5a pg 294
Thomas Pine dec qtr 1859 Beaminster vol 5a pg 273 (ages not given this early but it's a possible)
Luke Hogard Pine dec qtr 1857 Beaminster vol 5a pg 255

Given that his parents had died, I wondered if William had already started his journey to NZ. Could he have gone to Australia first?

Children's births registered, all Pine, all Beaminster
George  mar qtr 1838  vol 8 pg 2
Henry Hogard  dec qtr 1839  vol 8 pg 2
William  june qtr 1842  vol 8 pg 7
Thomas  march qtr 1844  vol 8 pg 7
Eliza  dec qtr 1848  vol 8 pg 7
Getting one of these would give you mother's maiden name.

Luke Hogard Henry Pine baptised 1809 Honiton on Otter son of William and Eliza batch no. C051141 on IGI. Possible siblings in same batch. Hope this helps.

Kiwirach,
I have just found this thread. William was the brother of my ancestor, Thomas. After much searching (and a lot of lateral thinking), I found Thomas living in Somerset in 1861. I have also located all the other siblings, except William and Henry Hogard.
To the best of my knowledge, there has been no record located yet of his arrival in NZ. I have a reference to a book of merchant shipping in 1861, which apparently mentions a Henry Pine, but have yet to track it down. I wonder if William didn't also join a merchant ship, and possibly jump ship in NZ.
Feel free to PM me; I have a suspicion we already know each other.  :)
