WEST Family - Stanmore Middlesex

Hi everyone,

I now have my great grandads death cert which tell me he was born in Stanmore Middlesex his name was George West and he was a shoemaker he was 83 when died on 8/11/1899 here in Australia it also states that he had been in Australia for 40years.

His father was Samuel West he was a clerk but no mother is listed Georges wife was Sarah Clark and they married Ailsbury, Berk, they were married 34years.

George had children George Thomas age 41 at time of fathers death and Robert aged 35 also a daughter Harriet as well as 2 females deceased no names given.

Anyone who can help with his mothers name or his birth information actually any information at all would be appreciated

George's marriage you mention seems to have taken place in Aylesbury registration district Buckinghamshire.

George would have been around 38. Was this a second marriage for him? Have you details from the marriage certificate?

Details would help place George on the 1851 census - where there are no George Wests born Stanmore showing (nearest was George aged 35 born Whitton, but he was a gardener).

The IGI has a baptism for a George West in Stanmore - father Samuel

By 1861 George would be in Australia (left England circa 1859)
The 1841 census does not give place of birth, merely whether born in or out of county, no relationships and rounds adult ages down to the nearest 5, so is harder to search.

It is possible that George' sister Sophia was living in Aylesbury on the 1851 census.
A Sophia Shepherd was born in Stanmore circa 1814 and appears on the 1851 census in Aylesbury. She had two children aged 8 and 5 and was married to Joseph (according to the children's baptisms - he was not with her on the 1851 census entry). The IGI does have a marriage for a Joseph Shepherd and Sophia West in London in 1842.

This might be the reason George married in Aylesbury.

This Sophia seems to have been in Aylesbury on the 1841 census with a potential younger sister.
