Bettinson & Brockton Families
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 02:10 BST (UK) »
Hello from New Zealand.

My g-g-g-g-grandparents were:

Joseph Bettinson b Flintham 1745, d Flintham 30/3/1816 and
Ann Brockton b 1757 d Flintham 1838

Married Elston Chapel 16/12/1782

Joseph's parents were:

Joseph Bettinson b c1707 d Flintham 1772 and
Sarah (Cartwright) b c 1719 d Flintham 1764

Married Flintham 27/4/1736

That's as far back as I can go - any more gets very tricky from this far away !

John (son of Joseph and Ann) moved to Lincs. The Brockton name has been used frequently in subsequent generations (Wadsley, etc) at least as recently for my first cousin (1950).

If anyone has any information at all, it would be most welcome.

Regards

Francis

 Mother:  MARGRAT

possibility for Joseph's birth?

Hello Janet

I did find this but since that time (and when I posted my enquiry) I've got hold of all the research of Guy Bettinson 1909-1992 who must have visited every parish church in England.

His findings (which are also available in the IGI library) trace Bettinson (plus Bettison and other variants) as follows:

John Bettinson (b 1600) submitted the family arms at the visitation of London in 1635 and his great-grandfather William (b 1480) proved his arms at the visitation of Essex in 1515.

It turns out that these were the original arms of the Counts of Flanders brought to England in 1260 by William de Béthune, son of the Count of Flanders. He was sent as a surety so that the Flemish weavers could get their wool.

He stayed in England and the surname evolved to how the locals pronounced it! In 1326 Richard de Betoyne was Lord Mayor of London.

The Counts of Flanders go back to Charlemagne and King Alfred - a long story.

Amongst Guy's papers was a book where Ann Brockton recorded the date, plus time of day!, when she was married and all her children were born. That's quite handy !

It's the Brockton family that's my priority now. I think Ann's parents could be John Brockton & Elizabeth Rippon.

Not many people researching this name, unfortunately.

Francis

Hello Francis,

Would you kindly allow me to share your tree information you have obtained about Guy Bettinson as it is difficult for me to visit the IGI.

Thanks in advance,
Raissa Bettinson, England

Hello Francis

I've just recently joined rootschat and came across your message.

Mary Job (nee Brockton) 1761-1851 was married to my G-G-G Grandfather Henry Job, who's sister Ann Brockton married Joseph Bettinson as you mention.

From the UK National Archives documents online, I have been able to deduce that Mary Job, Ann Bettinson, Elizabeth Parker, John Brockton and George Brockton are mentioned in Elizabeth Brockton's extract of her will as her sons and daughters and concur with you that this Elizabeth Brockton is probably Elizabeth Rippon (1730- abt 1808) who married John Brockton on 12th May 1755.

What I am struggling to do at the moment is connect these generations with later descendants such as William Rippon Brockton. Perhaps, you could help with this?

Best regards,
Mike

Hello Mike

Great to hear from another Brockton researcher at long last! If you can email me at francisp@xtra.co.nz we can discuss further.

Believe it or not, I actually have a photo of William Rippon Brockton - "the well known Notts sportsman who twice rode in the Grand National".

Look forward to hearing from you.

Francis
