Hi Graham

Just had a thought, have you noticed the similarity between Daniel's wife's uncles name BRANDFIELD and the name of the bloke he stole off BROWNFIELD.  Coincidence or what?

Hi Bob

I had thought of the similarity between Brandfield and Brownfield,  if said in an irish or even Norfolk accent it could have easily been misheard.

/ symbol was more was more like a small L  - 300 (l) (can't / don't know how to change font on rootschat) and was different to shillings which was 40 s which was on his sentence.

Not many Brandfields or Brownfields in Norfolk by 1841 census. I think one John Hayden Brownfield was a surgeon and had a memorial in St Saviors church which was incidentially on Magdalen Street but unsure if linked as different trades.

So did Daniel start a new family down under!

Hi Graham

Looks like I better do a bit more work on the Brandfield/Brownfield possible connect - thanks.

Come to think of it the letter L was used as a symbol for Pounds, so maybe, and more logically, it was 300 pounds.  Although thats a hell of a lot of money.

Daniel formed a relationship with a married woman  about 1838. This lady was my wife's ancestor and the daughter of two convicts.  She was born in VDL and had three kids with her husband, also a convict, before meeting up with Daniel and going on to have 14 more kids.  Her name was Sarah Ann Mullins nee Hopkins and we have been unable to find any record of a marriage to date.

The family moved to South Australia about 1846 and then to Victoria  around 1857.  Daniel died in 1862.

Thanks for all your help
