Thank you very much for that. It will help me to pinpoint where the family were living at various times. It seems as if there was quite a bit of drunkenness in Ossett!
Another unrelated branch of the family- the Swallows, lived in Ossett around 1850-1860. I don't think they did anything to get into the papers though.

Thanks again
Sue

Hmm ... the name Joshua Swallow rings a bell ... I'll have a look later when I'm at home.

(The drunkenness - thankfully - is a thing of the past ... not least to do with the fact that half of the pubs have closed down since the Vict. era!)

There are two Joshua Swallows in my family tree (father and son). I hope it is one of them.

I have a William Andrew Swallow who was a mungo manufacturer at Paleside- his father was a Joshua.
This will be a new line of research for me.
Many thanks
Sue

No probs - when I have time (ha ha!) I will look through the earlier directories for Ossett in the 19th century to see what else comes up.

There is a book published by Brian Smith about the pubs of Ossett

Yes that's the one where I got the info from earlier in the thread. It's a great book, well researched.

Thank you all so much for all this information. I have not done anything on this part of my family for ages; I’ll have to dig a bit further with this one I like a bit of scandal in the family!!
