Bulls Head Inn, Dale Street, Ossett
« on: Saturday 14 October 06 22:21 BST (UK) »
Hi everybody,

I am really excited as I have just made a new discovery. My Great Great Great Grandfather John Lockwood, born 1831 in Lepton has just turned up in Ossett in the 1871 census. Now up until today I have had him down as a shoe maker but in the 1871 census he is down as a Publican of the Bulls Head Inn, Dale Street, Ossett which if I'm honest is much more interesting! ;D

Now I have been to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and have found it on there but I can't seem to find any reference to it being still in existence. Do any of you lovely people know if it is still there perhaps as a different name?

I would be very greatfull for any information :-*

Emma

Hi Emma
Any idea what number Dale Street? I found the Horse & Jockey at number 18 on 'beer in the evening' pub guide. Seems Ossett has lots of pubs! There is a little Bull? Maybe yours has changed name?
Cheers
JK

Hi, I am new to this forum, and find it to be a fantastic place - why did I not find this before?!

Here is a pic of the Bulls Head Inn, Ossett. It closed at the end of 1937, and was demolished in 1972. I have a Gamwell Cudworth as licensee in 1867, John Lockwood in 1870 and George Beevers in 1873. John Lockwood was charged with permitting drunkenness on 11 Oct 1870 and fined for permitting drunkenness in licensed premises on 2nd Aug 1872. Hope this is of interest and helps with dates.

Thank you so much! This is great! I haven’t done much with my own family for so long but this has really spurred me on to get back to it. Where did you find the records about him permitting drunkenness? – wait till I tell my grandfather!!

If you ever need anything in the Scottish records please let me know so I can return the favour.

Thanks again,

Emma

Excellent - I am glad it was of help. I have been researching the Ossett Observer newspaper for years, but this info came from a local book recently published by the local historical society. Any more info needed on the pub please let me know.

It's great to be of help - I really enjoy my research, and get a real kick out of sharing what I find. Most of my research is local history (Ossett, West Yorkshire), but inevitably this leads to researching people now and again. I have a couple of people who I need info about and would happily accept help on them, I will post a "wanted" request later...

Keep up the good work admin - you're doing an excellent job with this site!  :)

Hi Emma & Nevthedigger

I came across this thread because I was also researching the Bull's Head in Ossett. We are related to George Beevers who took over from John Lockwood.
Emma, In the "Sheffield & Rotherham Independent" of 12th March 1873, John Lockwood of the Bull's Head Inn, Ossett is declared bankrupt.

I would be interested in any other information about the Beevers family in Ossett. George Beevers took over the Bull's Head in 1873 but by 1881 he was innkeeper at the Three Horseshoes, Bentley, Doncaster. Then. in the 1891 census, his widow Emma is back managing the Bull's Head.

Best wishes
Sue

Here is what I have of the Beevers:

George Henry Beevers was landlord in 1873, and in 1878 it was taken by William Saxton. In 1888 it went back to G H Beevers again, and then Emma Beevers in 1890. She kept it til 1894 when George Scott became landlord.

A little bit of info: In March 1878 George Henry Beevers was fined £2 plus costs for permitting drunkenness in licensed premises.
