District Liverpool Industrial Schools, Kirkdale, Civil
« on: Friday 13 October 06 22:03 BST (UK) »
Hi there! :D

One of my rellies John Wilde B 1856 in Liverpool is in the 1871  census as a 'scholar'  in District Liverpool Industrial Schools, Kirkdale, Civil Parish: Kirkdale  Liverpool
 ???
What kind of institution is this?  A workhouse? Orphanage? There are children as young as 5 here (sob!!)

Can you help establish what type of institution this was ;)

Cheers
Jan

Hi Jan

Have a look at this site
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Liverpool/Liverpool.shtml

It gives a good write up about Kirkdale Industrial School.

Liverpool Records Office have some records that you can search, but weather they go as far back as you need, you would have to check. I found my grandfather and his brother in Kirkdale Industrial School. In the record book I found them in, it stated who had admitted them into the school, that helped a lot in my research, and also there is a coloum in the book which will tell you weather there is a parent in another workhouse.
Children must have been taught there, my grandfather was there from 1886 at least until 1891,(last known record of him being there)I know that he could read and write, because he later became a postman in the Liverpool area.

hope this help you a bit

Wow! Auntie San :D

Thank you! :)

Coincidence, but my hubby's G Granddad was a postie in Staffs, Derbys and Manchester - I have a book of employees in 1952 - if any of your rellies followed in his footsteps they may be in my book! ;)

Cheers

Hi Jan

I saw that post about the postmen, shame but my granddad left before the war,So it is a bit before your book he did however get a imperial medal for long service from the post office. None of the family went into the post office, after him.
Would have been good if he was in there it is a trip to London to look up post office records, to far for me to go at the minute.

Thanks

San

HI San

What was his name? Maybe I can find someone of interest that is remotely connected?  What region did he cover? My hubby poo pooed me for putting a bid in on the book (on e-bay) because his G Grandad was abt 70 when it was published but when I received it there were several sons and cousins listed who we thought were civil servants (not connected with the PO) so it was a good buy for £4!

Cheers

There is more information about industrial schools here:
http://www.missing-ancestors.com/old_site/index.html

in the list of schools,
http://www.missing-ancestors.com/old_site/ALPHABETICAL%20LIST%20OF%20ALL%20SCHOOLS.htm
search for kirkdale
to get this page:
http://www.missing-ancestors.com/old_site/kirkdale_day_industrial_school%20liverpool.htm

I've deliberately added all the links here, as the whole site is in the process of being reorganised, and it makes searching a bit more difficult (notice the 'old_site' in the link-addresses)

From the site www.workhouses.org.uk which was given earlier (did you look at it?)

Liverpool Record Office and Local History Service, Central Library, William Brown Street, Liverpool L3 8EW. ◦Guardians' minutes (1852-1922)

◦Kirkdale Industrial School— Admissions and discharges (1862-1965); Classification registers (1845-97); Creed register (1869-1904).
◦Kirkdale Homes — Creed registers (1913-1969); Registers of deaths (1924-1971).

From Liverpool Record Office Catalogue
1  353 SEL/22  Kirkdale Industrial School Admission and Discharge Registers  1862-1865
2  353 SEL/22/1  Kirkdale Industrial School Admission and Discharge Register  29 Dec 1862 - 10 Jun 1865

You will need to contact Liverpool record Office to find which site the records are at and then visit to see them.

From the site www.workouses.org.uk referring to Prescot
Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane, Preston, Lancashire, PR1 2RE. Very limited holdings include Guardians' minutes (1837-1930).

Again you will need to contact the Record Office this time Lancashire Record Office at Preston

The records are not online so it means visiting the record offices or paying someone to do the research for you.
