Sorry, no record on the OMI of a Mary DEWE (or variants) marrying a MA(T)THEW(E)S or ARTHUR before 1670.

Again, many thanks for the lookups.

So, barring transcription errors or crazy spellings, it looks like John Hawkins didn't marry a Mary Dewe in Oxfordshire at that time. So the only remaining Oxford possibilities are if she was a widow, and we haven't found the right combination of a Mary Dewe marrying a man with the same last name as someone John Hawkins later married. Needles in haystacks time! Or perhaps he wasn't from Oxfordshire and they got married in his home parish.

Does anyone know if there's a burial index for Oxfordshire that might have more information about John Hawkins who died abt 1702 in Great Milton? Knowing his age would be a step to taking him back one more generation to see if he could have been a direct descendant of Sir John.

Best

Alex

Checked OMI again noticed this one if the dates fit Mary's surname could have been transcribed wrong.
12/10/1659 John Hawkins married Mary Hawkes at Thame.

There is a partial burial index for Oxfordshire, at the Family History Online website (pay-per-view).  Go to www.familyhistoryonline.net > Available Databases > Oxfordshire, to see which parishes are covered.

Hello Alex,
Are you still working on this?
I 'picked' this thread up as I'm working on the Dewe/Banks part.

Hello:  John Hawkins did marry Mary Dew.  The following is the info you need taken from records at Oxford:  Hawkins, John, of the Inner Temple, London, Esq. married Mary Dew of Oxford on 18 February, 1679/80 at St. Michael, St. Mary Magdalen or St. Giles, Oxford.  I believe the church records were combined and that is the reason the records give three different churches.  However, since a christening took place at St. Mary's in Oxford, I believe the church where the marriage took place to be St. Mary Magdalen.
