John Adam Donald Sutherland from Edinburgh to NZ
« on: Friday 13 October 06 01:11 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone!

I am hoping to track down the whereabouts and any potential descendants of a certain John Adam Donald Sutherland (born 12 Aug 1879, Edinburgh) son of Donald Sutherland (born about 1847, Hilton, Fearn - died 12 Oct 1879, Edinburgh) and Isabella Storey (born about 1854, Kelso - died 25 Feb 1913, Edinburgh).

John Adam Donald Sutherland was the twin brother of William Bruce Sutherland (born 12 Aug 1879, Edinburgh - died 27 Jul 1933, Edinburgh).

John married Elizabeth Gill (born about 1881) daughter of Robert Gill and Isabella Walker on 20 Oct 1902 at 35 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh.

At some point after 1902 John and Elizabeth Sutherland left Edinburgh and headed for New Zealand. After this, we do not know where he wound up in New Zealand nor do we know if they had any children.

The other few bits of information that I can add for John Adam Donald Sutherland, is that on his marriage record it indicated he was a Ship Steward and the usual residence for both John and Elizabeth Gill was 2 Upper Grove Place, Edinburgh.

If anyone can point me in the right direction on how I can potentially track down John Adam Donald Sutherland and Elizabeth "Gill" Sutherland in New Zealand, I would really appreciate the help!

Colin

Dear Bronwen,

Thank you very, very much for finding the WW1 Reserves Index record for John Adam Donald Sutherland, the twin brother of my great grandfather William Bruce Sutherland!

Is the WW1 Reserves Index database a resource that is available online?

Would I be correct in thinking that tracking down the names of John and Elizabeth Sutherland's children will be a difficult quest? You'll have to forgive me because I am not familiar with what resources are available to researchers for New Zealand during this time period.

Would I be correct in thinking that if perhaps the Sutherland family stayed put at 60 William Street, Wadestown or in the Wadestown area that perhaps they would be listed in later Electoral Rolls?

Thank you very much again for your help in tracking down our Sutherland cousins in New Zealand!

Colin  :)

Hello Colin

Probaby locating a record of their death and then newspaper notices and/or probate files may help provide you with children's names.  The birth index doesn't provide a parents name to confirm a relationship unfortunately, at least not until well after the period that relates to John and Elizabeths children.  The WW1 index is on cd.  I don't have access to electoral rolls but hopefully someone else can assist you with that.

Email Karori cemetery and ask them to check for John and Elizabeth - they are very helpful.

Another useful link is:

I checked the 1926 Post Office directory and there are a lot of John Sutherlands but none that seemed to match.

Regards, Bronwen

Hi there,

My NZ Elec Roll are too early to assist, But here is a  marriages that may be yours, do you think this may be a son of John & Elizabeth's, look at the name or just a coincidence perhaps ?

(*)
Surname   SUTHERLAND
Given Names   William Bruce
Sex   M
Spouse   McMEEKEN, Mary

(*)
Surname   CROSS
Given Names   Mary
Sex   F
Spouse   SUTHERLAND, William Bruce

( NB: Same record, looks like wife may
have been married prior,This appears to be her first marriage, so her maiden name is likely McMeeken)

(*)
Surname   McMEEKEN
Given Names   Mary
Sex   F
Spouse   CROSS, Edward John Cecil

1st husband appears on probates in Invercargill, so maybe this is a good place to start looking for hubby number 2  William Bruce Sutherland.

Dear Del,

Thank you for sharing this record in regard to(*) marriage record of William Bruce Sutherland and Mary McKeeken. I do not think this is a coincidence, but rather a very good likelihood that this William Bruce Sutherland is a son or more likely a grandson of John Sutherland and Elizbaeth Gill.

One thing to understand about my Sutherland family, is that the "middle" name of Bruce is prevalent. From my grandmother and all of her siblings having the middle name "Bruce", to my great grandfather William Bruce Sutherland and also to John's mother Isabella Storey's family there were family members with the middle name "Bruce".

Other first names that John and Elizabeth Sutherland might of called their children would also include Sophia, Isabella, Catherine and George.

Kia Ora Colin
Might be a complete coincidence but I knew Sutherlands from Edendale in Southland - I only ever knew him as Mr S but her name was definitely Mary.
I have photos from when I stayed at their farm and, somewhere, photos of their headstone which if I can find them, might give me more info.
Both would have been in their 80s circa 1980 and they had had 2 children both of whom died under 3 years of age from the same heart defect.
I live at the other end of the country but have much info if there is a connection.
Mr S was very proud of the fact that the Queen rode one of his horses while she was in New Zealand.

Marlene
