Silo in Galway City
« on: Thursday 12 October 06 19:29 BST (UK) »
Looking for help with birth record for George Louis Silo born June 10, 1874.  Parents George Silo and Lizzie Liddle.  Father worked as a ship broker in Galway in 1862 and it is believed that the family was still there when George Jr was born.

Any family information would be very helpful too as we have few details about their lives there.

Also, further details on siblings would be appreciated:

Madeline born circa 1878
Lucy
Mary
Monica

Thanks!

Hi surlie,
 - http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=trueFamily search  has other children than those you have named - sadly not George Louis. Hweover, you would be able to get a birth certificate for him through Irish records.
best wishes

Hello.

I read with interest, your message.

My name is Gerard Silo-Gorman.
I was born in Belfast and my grandfather was George Louis Silo, born Belfast 1st September 1905. I have the original birth certificate, given to me, by my mother.

My great-grandfather was, Modesto Silo and his younger brother was also named George Louis Silo 1800s. I can only presume, my grandfather, was named after him.
Both Modesto and his younger brother George Louis, played football, for the famous Belfast team "Glentoran" at Belfast's Ormeau Park.
They get a mention, in the book written about Glentoran and there is a portrait of George Louis as well.

Please feel free, to contact me.

Gerry.

Hello Gerry,
thanks for the pm- I have nothing to do with the Silo name - just found our what I could to help Surlie.
After your pm and this posting, I googled Modesto Silo and there is another message board which Surlie has posted on and others. It seems as though your Silos were a large family and as families named their children after other members it becomes difficult to track.
I do hope that Surlie reads your message -
best wishes

Hello again Heywood.

Thank you for replying.
As I'm sure you’ve guessed, this is all very new to me.
Would it be possible, to give me the other groups address.

Kind Regards
Gerry.

In the interim I did find my grand father's birth registration but would be interested in any information that you have about the family in Galway.

Hi,  This is all I know about George Louis Silo.   Born 4th May, 1830 too Modesto Silo and Mary Lewis.  Got married 19.2.1862 to Lissy Liddle (Elizabeth) in Midlothian, Scotland.   He was a merchant in Fairhill & Dargan Co. Galway and had the following children.

13.1.1866 unnamed daughter
19.4.1868 Lissie Josephine Silo
11.8.1870 Eugane Silo
8.1.1872 Rosa Silo
10.6.1874 George Louis
all the above born in Galway
alos born
2.6.1878 Madeline 9 Corporation Square, Belfast (now a clerk)
15.10.1881 Monica Winifred (now an agent of 35 My Lady,s Road, Belfast

So he seems to have left Galway and changed his occupations quite a lot.  He was also also a tobacconist of 3, Castle Lane, a spirit grocer at 10 Walnut Street and a publican 9 Corporation Street.

Hopes this helps.
