Hi Arthur,

Bothwell Street is very much in business area also. However checked up for other family,

Children of John Dobbie and Jane McIndoe were: -

Helen Dobbie b 27 Jun 1855 Anderston, Glasgow (extracted record)
John Dobbie b 27 Aug 1856 Anderston, Glasgow (extracted record)
Helen Greenhill Dobbie 05 Aug 1859 Anderston, Glasgow (extracted record)
Margaret McBeth Dobbie 17 Jan 1862 Barony, Glasgow (extracted record)
Robert McIndoe Dobbie 15 Feb 1864 Barony, Glasgow (extracted record)
William McBeth Dobbie17 Feb 1866 Barony, Glasgow (extracted record)

So it looks like they moved from Bothwell St, Anderston to Stockwell St, Barony district after 1859 and before 1861 census.

Tom, thanks again for replying and the other info, I spent 2 years trawling through the Glasgow 1861 Census before I found my family I am now trying to find John on the 1851 Census for Glasgow and Edinburgh as Edinburgh was given as his place of birth on one of his childrens birth certificates but I don't fancy spending another couple of years doing that.

Hi Arthur,

I have found a 6 yo John Dobie (1 x B) staying in the Wirral, Cheshire to parents John and Isabella, who were all born in Scotland in the 1841 England census.

I cannot find him in the 1851 English or Scottish census, although there was a 16 yo lodger, but could not prove it was him.

We already posted 1861 Scotland census, now we find him again as John Dobbie (2 x B) in the 1871 English census in Liverpool as a 35 yo Tinsmith with 33 yo wife Jane, son John 13 is a Tinsmith, Helen (Ellen) is 11 Margaret 8, Robert6 all born in Scotland plus Anne 1 born in Liverpool.

They are in Toxteth Park in the 1881 census, and in 18 White St, Liverpool in the 1891 where Jane the wife states that she was born in Liverpool where previously it has stated Scotland.

Perhaps with wife Jane a Liverpool lass, maybe that is why they moved back. I think John's parents maybe John and Isabella from 1841 census.

Tom, many thanks once again for your reply I have  the Census 1861 Glasgow and 1871 to 1901 Liverpool for my family. I'm not sure if Jane was a Liverpool lass as other relatives said she had a strong Scottish accent. I will follow up the Wirral link as there is another rootswebber researching this family and we are going to exchange info. I did find a marriage in Cannongate Edinburgh   4 May 1818 of Richard Dobie and Margaret McBeth (one of John's children was called Margaret McBeth Dobbie) but could not prove these were John's parents.
