Newspaper Obituary - William Levi HECTOR
« on: Sunday 08 October 06 18:07 BST (UK) »
My GG Grandfather William Levi Hector committed suicide on 18 Nov 1938 in Higham Ferrers. My Grandad has told me that his death appeared in the local newspaper (I'm assuming its an obituary - it could be a news item). What I am wondering is what was the local newspaper of that time? And do they have a website with archives? Or is there someone who can look it up for me?

Any help is appreciated as I no longer live in the area.

Hi Sarahh

I looked at the Mercury and Herald between 18th Nov just in case to the start of
December but could not find a mention of William.

Maybe someone else has ideas of which paper.

Cheers Sandy

I would have thought it would have been the Evening Telegraph as now, there is a Kettering version and a Wellingborough one.

I do know that Kettering library hold them on microfilm-don't know if they do look ups though?

Or the Kettering Evening Telegraph offices themselves.

I know they allow personal callers to visit by appt and look through back copies, dunno if they do look ups though  :-[

Good luck

Carol

I wrote an email to Kettering Library about a week ago and received a reply saying they would pass it on to their research assistant, but I haven't had a reply since then.

I will email the newspaper to see if they do look ups.

Thanks for the info!

Sarah,

Did you ever get anywhere with this newspaper look up?

The ET librarian has just retired, don't know if they are replacing her.

Hi

Yes I did manage to get a newspiece on his death just before Xmas. A fellow Hector researcher lives in Kettering and she kindly went to have a look for me.

The only disappointing factor was that the article is in the centre fold of the newspaper and some of it is difficult to read. I placed a transcription (what I could read) up on my website.

I was speaking to a relative and aparently when William commited suicide his Granddaughters mother in law, who was very religious, disproved greatly of his death and wrote a book about his life and career - it also includes all the news paper cuttings surrounding it. He was in the paper again the following week I believe when detailed his funeral - though I don't have that.
