Charles DAVIDSON Monquhitter
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 04:46 BST (UK) »
I'm new to all this and my original message seems to be lost. My husbands gg grandfather was Charles Davidson b. 1806 in Monquhitter, he married Christian Smith in 1837 who was born in New Dear. They had about 5 children, James being Brents g grandfather, who married Mary S. Mitchell in 1882, who was born in Hedditon of Cullen. They sailed to New Zealand in 1906 and were followed in 1908 by their son James and family in 1908. Haven't been able to find Monquhitter but know they all lived around that area. Would be grateful for any information you can give. Regards Lorraine ::)

Hi

Monquhitter (pronounced Monwitter) is the area around Cuminestown, a village lying between New Deer and Turriff.

The ANEFHS website lists the following MI in Monquhitter Churchyard

Stone Number 16:

Patricia Gordon D. RAMSAY
Jane DAVIDSON 25 May 1839
Charles DAVIDSON 7 Jan 1880
Thomas M. DAVIDSON 29 Jan 1882
James DAVIDSON 14 Jan 1900
Christina SMITH 16 May 1913

Could that be your Charles and Christian (Christina)?

Unfortunately the full transcriptions have not been published yet, but perhaps someone may have access to the unpublished data, or maybe lives locally and could track down the grave. I was through there for the first time in years just last week - if only I had seen your message earlier!

Hope this helps

Hi Gary, yes that sounds like our family. Charles and Christina were my husbands ggg grandparents and Thomas M was their son. How exciting! I can't place Jane or James, although my husbands g and gg grandfathers were named James, but died here in New Zealand. Thanks so much for that, if you find anything more I be very greatful.
Regards Lorraine.   : :))

You beat me to it Joe!

I was using the Ancestry census indexes and in 1851 they have Christian and Jessie as being born in Auchindoir - is that a transcription error? I didn't check the original on Scotlands People.

Good Luck with your research Lorraine. Joe's got you off to a great start!

Happy Hogmanay

Hi Joe, we were over in Scotland a couple of years ago. What a beautiful part of the world. My eldest son was working in London, as a chef so we managed to stay with him. Then headed up north staying in Morpeth, Edinburgh, Ellon where my husbands Aunt lives. Had a good look around there but unfortunately at that stage I wasn't doing my tree, so didn't go to the right places. Had a wonderful time over there and hope to get back again one day.
Regards Lorraine.

hi lorraine, once you have digested the info supplied earlier, you can follow it up with later posts, it would be nice for you to complete your tree by the end of 2007!!!
