Hi there can anyone tell me about any sites/museums that would have information on service records and SSN numbers for soldiers in the first World War?

If you haven't already, check out the War Graves Commission www.cwgc.org

or National Archives site www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/

or 1837online military records www.1837online.com (may need credits for this one)


My hubbies great grandfather was in the Northumberland Fusiliers and we found these sites most helpful. 

Also if you google "Northumberland Fusiliers" I think we came across a few sites that gave background information, especially if you know what battalion as well.

thanks for the sites i will check them out.

i have know idea what battalion he was in or anything i only found out by chance that he was in the army. i found it looking for another rellie on the national roll of the great war.

 I have a history of the 19th battalion of the N.F. that lists all soldiers and officers serving in the battalion during WW1- I can have alook for him if you give me his name.

His name was james fletcher
joined in june of 1916 landed in france  sometime in august and fought at the somme also took part in fighting at arras ypres then he was wounded in july 1917 on recovery went with british forces to italy and was in action on the Plave and Asiago Plateau was demobbed in january 1919

Address reads 21 Durham St salford

This is from the national roll of the great war.

I would be very grateful if you could have a look for me

Hi Tigster

Your relative James Fletcher is not listed with the 19th Battalion N.F. - the three Fletchers that were with the battalion were all killed in action.

I'm sure someone on the site I gave you earlier could help you out as there are one or two N.F. specialists who log on and pass on their encyclopedic knowledge. Good luck.
