Mary Mary quite contrary!!!
« on: Tuesday 03 October 06 17:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I've been searching for Mary for quite some time now and have drawn a blank so maybe I need some input from a new set of eyes. Here is what I know.

On the 1861-1891 census returns she is Mary ADAMS "wife" of Edward ADAMS. Mary gives her birthplace as North Somercotes, Lincs and is consistent with her age giving a birth date of 1827. She died in 1892.

Edward and Mary Adams had 9 children, the eldest b1856 and the youngest b1871 all born in E Yorks

I have birth certs for 3 of the children on one( her eldest child) it gives Mary's name as formerly CLARK.
On the next ( her second child) it says late ROBINSON formerly CLARK.
On the last it says late ROLLISON formerly CLARK.

From this I assume that Mary was born Mary Clark, and on the IGI there is a MARY CLARK b North Somercotes 1826 father Robert Clark, mother Mary Clark. Can I claim her as mine?

BUT I cannot find my Mary on the 1841 or 1851 census returns. I can find  Robert and Mary Clark in North Somercotes. In 1841 they have a married daughter with them Sophia aged 25. (IGI Sophia Clark b 1814 Keddington)

So my problems are these..

1) Where is my MARY CLARK b 1827 in 1841 and 1851?

2) Was she married to someone called ROBINSON/ROLLISON? If so I cannot find this marriage.

3) I cannot find her marriage to EDWARD ADAMS either.

Also EDWARD ADAMS seems only to exist on census returns between 1861 and 1891. I cannot find his birth, death or marriage. He did register his wife Mary's death so I have to assume he was real!!

So any suggestions as to what to do now would be very welcome.

Thanks   Sue

Hi Sue

I have found a marriage on IGI between Edward ADAMS & Mary CLARKE-Robinson 1857 Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, England.

It looks like someone has been working backwards from other info, doesn't it?

Hi,

Thanks for taking time to read my plea for help.

I too have seen the marriage entry on the IGI but note that it is a submitted entry not one from the parish records. I think that it is highly suspect as I searched the Hutton Cranswick parish register at the East Yorks Archives a few years ago and could not confirm it.

However I now feel doubtful that I checked carefully enough and will need to confirm my search by looking again. At the time I think that I tried to do too much on the one day I had at the Archives and didn't keep careful enough records of negative findings. Too new and too keen!!! Now older and definitely wiser... I think.

Hi Geoff and Arkwright,

Any suggestions about what I could do now?

I have just spent time going through the deaths again for Mary's "husband" Edward Adams. He is not on the 1901 census, well I can't find him, he registered Mary's death in 1892 so I've searched 1892-1901 and there are none that look likely. But clutching at straws there is a death of Edward Davey Adams age 66 Louth Jun 1893. My Edward was from Lincolnshire or so he says on the census returns but my last sighting of him is in Driffield.

Oh for a marriage or death of Edward Adams!!!
