I have a family interest in Stanhope.  My great grandfather, Inspector Andrew Stark, was transferred from West Stanley Police, on his appointment as Superintendent, to Stanhope in 1913.

A house in the village was pointed out to me, as being where he and the family had once lived, which is now a B & B.  I have since found that the family were living in 'Conaty House', Stanhope in 1916, which casts doubt on the B & B as being the same place, as that has a totally different name.

So.... if anyone can please help, I'm trying to find if 'Conaty House' still exists and if so, where in the village it is.

Hello,

I have ancestors from Weardale, they married here in the Parish Church of Wolsingham in 1854, there names were William Appleby and Eleanor Whitfield. Eleanor and her family lived in Wolsingham. William's was residence when he married was Stanhope and Eleanor's was Bishopley or Bishopry.

William's daughter Eve Appleby was born in Stanhope, and she married Charles Hudson I think in 1895. William in 1901 lived with his daughter, who was living with her husband. They are living at Vulcan Street, Witton Park. William's wife died in 1894.

Do you have any Applebys, Whitfields or Hudsons from Weardale.

Thanks,

Best Wishes,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Do you know the names of Eleanor's parents? Did she have any siblings?

Yes, her parents were John Whitfield and Sarah (Balmer). Her siblings were Ann, John, Elizabeth and Joshua. I have only found the census for 1851 for them. Maybe you could help find the others, John and Sarah may ahve died there in Wolsingham I don't know, wish I did.

Thanks,

Regards,

Ryan

Ryan,

The place is swarming with Whitfields you know.  ;D

It would help if you could give some approximate years of birth specially for Eleanor and her parents. Any other info you have about the family would be great too. - You obviously know Eleanor's parents are John and Sarah Balmer ... do you have a source for this info?

I have Whitfields in the area too. There are several families of them around Durham/Northumberland, and some are fairly well documented. It's just a matter of working out which lot yours fit into. The names Eleanor Whitfield and William Appleby rang a bell (but I might just be imagining it) which is why I asked who her parents were.

Ryan,

Found a couple of things for you:

1861
Rodymoor
Crook and Billy Row
RG9/3714/33/18
John Whitfield head widr quarryman Yks Swaledale
John son 16 quarryman Westmorland Brough
Ann daur 10 Durham Frocterly (?)
Mary daur 4 Durham Frocterly (?)

[So Sarah died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses  ;)]

Now I have no proof but I have a suspicion that these might be John's parents and siblings:
1841
Tin Bridge
Brough
Westmorland
HO107/1156/16/2
John Whitfield 75 lead miner
Eleanor 60
Joshua 20
Matthew 15
Mary 15
[None of the family is born in Westmorland]

From the IGI:
Eleanor Whitfield
chr 31 Mar 1833
Arkengarthdale (?)
Yorkshire
father John
mother Sarah

Joshua Whitfield
chr 26 Jul 1835
Edmondbyers (?)
Durham
father John
mother Sarah

John Whitfield = Sarah Balmer
16 Sept 1832 Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland

Doesn't look like our Whitfields have a connection as none of these families are familiar to me.

PS. If you have any specific requests or lookups for your family, it might be an idea to start a new thread on the appropriate board. I think I've already hi-jacked this thread too much, sorry marie and others.  ;D

Tynedale,

You might want to make this inquiry as a new topic rather than attached to this unrelated one.
