I ended up diverting my Martin branch when i went back through my notes and compared it with some 'new' records. Whilst the Martin people that I had taken as my own ancestors, turn out NOT to be the right people; the correct ancestors are related to them anyway!  :-[

My 'surrogate' ancestors being James Martin and his wife Mary Waters are now replaced with Robert Martin and Avis Tall.

Go back about 2 generations on both James and Robert's ancestors, and it appears to link them together with James Martyn and Jane Hescue (his second wife i believe).

Fortunately the CFHS www.cfhs.org.uk has just released a CDrom of the Coveney parish registers, which should hold the answer to the puzzle. Even though i've looked through the register a few times at the Cambridge archives, i'll be able to be more thorough in my peruse through the cdrom.

Great to hear from you Andrew.

The twists and turns of genealogy !

Have made several Martin connections over the past couple of years. It seems the Cambridgeshire Martins and their descendants moved to many parts of England and two (at least ) branches moved to Australia.

Good luck with the further refinement of your tree. Keep me posted.

Very frustrating this Martin name at times - Why couldn't we have something a little less common like, say  Nitram !

cheers

Hi Mark...I'm also a descendant of the Cambridgeshire Martins, loosely related to Andrew going back to James Martin (b.1694) and Jane Hescue (b.1698). If you don't mind me asking, what connection do you have to the Martin family tree?

Yes, Martin is a very common name isn't it, no wonder we hit a brick wall from time to time.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Chris Butler (nee Martin)

Most of us Martins (I'm one too !) hail from the Norman Invasion.  Martin is the most common name in France.  The closer you go to Dover, the more numerous they become, although you find them all over.  I'm a Cambridgeshire Martin, but I come from London.

Hi Nick...So, what branch of the Martin tree are you from? My family go back to James Martin (1694) and Jane Hescue (1698).
my gr grandparents were Charles Martin (1826-1900) and Elizabeth Houghton (1869-1883)

I'm from Hull but dad's (1907-1974) family came here from Coveney, Cambs around 1870 as grandad's (1866-1933)younger siblings were born here.

Since starting this family tree I've discovered Martins I never knew existed. My brother is also doing a family tree and we've swapped information.

Kind regards
Chris Butler (nee Martin)

I'm not entirely sure - I'm stuck at my g.g. grandfather William Martin b. abt 1805 in "Middlesex, London".  Most of my Martins seem to be bricklayers  :)
