Dawn, you don't seem to be having much luck with this  :(  Try Historical Directories  http://www.historicaldirectories.org/  to see if you can find a baker in the area who might be James's father.

Hi Jane.
yes it is a bit frustrating :(
The James Atterall I am trying to find out about,we think is linked to the Arthrell line UK.I am having trouble pinpointing exactly where and when he was born, and thus cannot try to link the two spellings together.I will try the link you suggested  ::)Fingers crossed.
My Grandad who died in 1965 aged 85,used to say that there was a "wrong-un" in the family who was hanged in australia....I just wish someone had questioned him further!!!!!!!
Cheers dawn

Ideally you might find detailed information about his offence in a newspaper of that time, but I know that's difficult for you. Did you quiz Chris 1066land and/or Amy on this?

Hi Dawn,

Slight problem with this - he was sentenced at the Lewes Quarter Sessions and listed as a resident there, but he may not have been a native of Lewes.  :(  I've looked in an 1823 directory and  one dated 1832-4  and there are no bakers listed with the name Atterall or similar.  However, that does not mean that his father was not a baker there, just did not run his own business or submit an entry into the directory.

At the moment I can't find a James Atterall baptised around 1817 - there is one in 1820 but that seems a bit too far out and it was in Brighton.

Dear Nell...thankyou for your help and for looking into the directories for me. I have had trouble finding mention of the Atterall name other than finding a George aged 78 who was charged at tonbridge petty sessions court 1882 for attempted suicide!bit frustrating not being able to find a start point....but then that's what family research is all about isn't it ::)
Jane masri suggested that I ask for help from Chris 1066land..so that will be my next move 8)
Thankyou again

P.S. Nel...me again ;)
When you said there was a James Atterall Brigton, would that still be Sussex...and would a baptism of 1820 possibly fit if he was not baptised as a young baby but a toddler?...I know...clutching at straws :P

Hi Dawn,

Well you never know when a straw may just be of use!

This is the baptism - it is the only one on Sussex that I have found at the moment (but there may be others)

James Attrill baptised 3 Sep 1820 Brighton, parents James and Anne Attrill

There are a large number of Attrills on the Isle of Wight.
