GRO in Ireland
« on: Sunday 07 November 04 21:05 GMT (UK) »
I thought researching my family was not going to be too difficult as I knew most of my family are based in England so trolling through 1837online was going to be a doddle, until I needed tofind out more about my Irish family.

My nan and her five other sisters where born in Emerald Isle, or so I thought, a 1911 census told me otherwise.

What I want to do is find a birth and a baptism cirtificate of someone who was born in Ireland, how would I do about it? Can this be found on the net like 1837online?
Name Interests: Holland, Marshall, Townrow, Taylor.

I am afraid not ... if only lol... can do a search for you if you want to pass on the info and will do it the next time I am in Joyce house...

otherwise you can write to
The General Register Office
 Joyce House,
8 – 11 Lombard Street,
Dublin 2
Ireland

and they will do the search for you... they do charge not sure how much but to buy a cert its 5.50 euro or i can get a photo copy if that would do you

Let me know if I can help at all

I thought that General registration did not start until 1864 in Ireland and marriages before that are held locally.

Hi

You're right Andrea - I went last week. 1864 is the start date for GRO.  I had to go down to the National Library to see the Parish Records for earlier dates.

Andrea,
Sorry for confusion - I didn't realise that registration didn't start until 1864.

What I would really like, then, is a copy of the register for St Anne's Church if anyone knows how to get this.

Thanks Audrey for your info - this is the right marriage.  Would really like to know the address they lived at at the time of marriage - they had two children before they married so would more than likely be living together?  Also James Jarrett was an army sergeant so would like to know if they lived in army accomaodation.

Thanks to everyone who helped!

If it was a Protestant marriage, you can get a copy from (£10):

http://www.belfastcity.gov.uk/bdm/registrations.htm

for Belfast marriages from 1845.

If Roman Catholic, they only hold from 1864 when Civil Registration for same began.

Getting access to a particular parish is a matter of trawling through the microfiche in the National Library in Dublin , or up in PRONI in Belfast. Getting a copy of the actual entry could be a matter of writing to the parish church.  I would imagine that if you got in touch with PRONI at http://www.proni.gov.uk or by writing to them at

 66 Balmoral Avenue
Belfast BT9 6NY
Northern Ireland

they then may be able to give you more help in finding which particular St Annes Church you are looking for.

Best wishes

Mo
