Can SKS please find Samuel Laughton who married Mary Wiles on 24 APR 1836 in the 1841 census please.

You should also find sons George and Jesse and perhaps Leonard.

I have the family from 1851 onwards.

Good to hear from you, hope you are well. Not been about much on Rootschat much myself lately and I see you've had you troubles also!

I've become slightly embroiled with the Laughtons lately. They are not very central to my tree but as always seems to be the case in Renhold they keep popping up and marrying into my lot all over the place! (I'm sure everyone is related to everyone else!)

Can you do me a favour and take a look for Thomas Laughton in 1841; he was Samuel's Father and should be found with his wife Mary aged about 63 a Farmer born Cardington he died in 1858 Mary July 16th 1841. (so still should be in the census)

Thomas appears in the Cardington census taken in 1782 - let me know if you would like details - there's a fair bit of information on his parents

Up to now I have his parents as Thomas & Elizabeth (from IGI) is this correct?

Where did you get the Cardington census from, it's the sort of thing I would like to browse, do you know if any of the Wootton family can be found there? I know that they farmed in Cardington at a later date, any sigh of them in 1782?

The censuses are held at BLARS, but have been transcribed and edited in a book published by Bedfordshire Historical Record Society in 1973 "The Inhabitants of Cardington in 1782" Ed. David Baker. There's an analysis as well and is a good buy - there's a copy available via Abebooks at £15 at the moment.

Elizabeth Laugton widow. Maiden name Hopkins. Born at Stasdon (sic) Makes lace. Age 40 (Bap 30 Nov 1740. Res and marr at Stagsden 7 Oct 1764 to Thos Lawton of Wootton who was bur 24 Feb 1778. Bur 11 Aug 1792)

(Elizabeth No baptism record at Cardington or Stagsden. Bur 5 Mar 1768)

1.   Susanna Makes lace. Age 14.3
(Ann Bap 9 Apr 1769 Bur 13 Apr 1769)
2.   Mary At school by Mr Whitbread Age 10.3 Died 4 Sept 1782 (Bap 27 Sep 1771 Bur 4 Sept 1782)

4.   Thomas At school by Mr Howard Age 3.9 (bap 8 Feb 1778)

The only mention of Wootton is Sarah Troman age 22.6 maiden name Wooton born at Bedford (bap 5 Aug 1759 at Bedford St Paul)

Hi David,

What a useful piece of work.

I had come across the name Hopkins previously; but only in a LDS submission, so to have such detail makes life so much easier.

The references to Mr Howard and Mr Whitbread refer of course to John Howard, the Prison reformer and Samuel Whitbread the MP and Social reformer both of which lived in Cardington. The very house in which I live was formally the Cardington Workhouse (still feels like it sometimes). It was built in 1757 and was paid for by John Howard, Ive Whitbread and Samuel Whitbread Snr. (Father of Sam Whitbread MP).

The level of detail in the 1782 census, makes obtaining a copy a must.

Hi,
I've just been looking at posts about Bedfordshire, and was interested to see your mention, Bedfordshire Boy, about the Cardington census of 1782.  I visited Cardington last year, but had no idea where my Conquest ancestors lived or whether the cottage still existed.  I wonder if they were on the census?

I was unlucky with searching for the gravestones of William and Mary Conquest, too, which were supposed to be in the churchyard, according to a microfiche I purchased from Bedfordshire family history society. (William was buried in 1841.) Oh well, what did I expect, with the memorial inscriptions having been done in 1928!
