Duncans Kilconquhar
« on: Friday 29 September 06 08:25 BST (UK) »
Mt great great grandmother was born Agnes Duncan around 1838ish.  She moved to England where the census gives her birthplace as 'Kilconter, Scotland'.  As such a place doesn't seem to exist, I am guessing that the census taker didn't know how to spell Kilconquhar.  (She is given elsewhere as born in Fife - so I guess that fits in)

Does anyone have any details of or connections to Duncans in this area?

I don't know when she moved to England, but she seems to have been there by 1859 for the birth of her first child.

Many thanks

Kate

Hi Kate

Have you tried looking for Agnes in the 1841 Census? There are only 3 showing, age 2-4, in all of Fife including a 4 yrs old  in Kilconquhar. FreeCen's 1841 transcriptions for Fife are not yet complete (around 37% to date) so can't see that entry. If you have access to Ancestry's 1841 Scottish Census index you will be able to see that entry. Somebody here might also be able to check for you.

Regards.

Kate

Just checked IGI. This looks like it could be the birth of the Agnes in Kilconquhar showing on SP 1841 Census age 4:

AGNES DUNCAN     Birth: 21 JUL 1836 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES DUNCAN     Mother: AGNES IRVING

There is however another entry on IGI for a 1839 birth in Kilconquhar:

AGNES DUNCAN  Birth: 23 JUN 1839  Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
Parents: Father: ARCHIBALD DUNCAN    Mother: MARION COLDWELL

Maybe the names of her children (if she and her husband followed Scottish naming patterns) can give you some additional clues.

Regards.

That's great, thank you very much for that.  Her son - my great grandfather was  James, so I'm going to investigate the first listing first I think!

Thanks again.  This my first dabble into my Scottish roots, and it's all very exciting.

 :)

The children showing for the first couple, James Duncan and Agnes Irving, all actual extracts from the OPRs (Old Parish Registers):

1. HENRY DUNCAN  Birth: 10 DEC 1843 Christening: JAN 1844 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
2. WILLIAM DUNCAN Birth: 10 APR 1841 Christening: About 16 MAY 1841 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER DUNCAN Birth: 12 FEB 1830 Christening: 28 MAR 1830 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
4. JEAN DUNCAN Birth: 06 SEP 1827 Christening: 04 NOV 1827 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
5. JEAN DUNCAN Birth: 30 JUL 1834 Christening: 07 SEP 1834 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
6. AGNES DUNCAN Birth: 21 JUL 1836 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
7. EUPHEMIA DUNCAN Birth: 08 JAN 1839 Christening: 27 JAN 1839 Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland

There are four additional  submitted entries for children:
1. Margaret Duncan  Birth: 1818 Of, Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
2. James Duncan Birth: 1819 Of, Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
3. Magnus Duncan Birth: 1821 Of, Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland
4. David Duncan Birth: 1823 Of, Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland

And, a possible marriage:

JAMES DUNCAN  Marriages Spouse:  AGNES IRVINE
Marriage:  10 FEB 1817  Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland

Hopefully from the ages showing for James and Agnes in the 1841 census, you can get some indication whether you have the right marriage and early birth details.

Regards.

I have traced my husbands line back to Alexander Duncan of Kilconquhar. He is listed as father on great-aunt Elizabeth Wallace's marriage record. Elizabeth's mother was Catherine Wallace, b.1828 Kilconquhar, she had 3 children outside of marriage, James, Elizabeth, and William (who died as a child). Euphemia Duncan was a witness at her wedding. Her brother James, my husbands g grandfather, never used the Duncan name as far as I know, but one of his sons used it as a middle name when he came to America. My husbands middle name is also Duncan, we never knew where it came from until today. I would love to chat with the original poster of this subject, at least let her know that I have posted some pictures of her long lost relatives online.
