I'm with Kerry too, I've found so many rellies who were crofters that I'd love to visit a centre such as http://www.highlandfolk.com/

Another place that I would find interesting if we choose the Inverness area is Culloden http://www.culloden.org/english/index.html

I found this googling... http://www.britainexpress.com/scotland/museums/index.htm

By the way, I visited the Sma' Shot Cottages in Paisley this summer and what a lovely place it is http://www.paisley.org.uk/attractions/sma.php
It's run by volunteers and free...they just ask a small donation. The volunteers give guided tours and really bring the place to life. Well worth a visit if you're in the area :) :)

Thanks for those links, Elaine  :)
We might end up having a long weekend tour  :D

Christopher - this is getting to be a bit like a Celtic Cousins ReUnited, me thinks. Maybe Wales,  the Isle of Man and Cornwall could be included  :D  ::) ::) ::)  :D
Offshore islands - we are all residents or descendants of this little archipelago - what a formidable tribe we've become  :)

Hi Gadget,

Count me in (provisonally) unless holidays clash with dates.

Anything I can do to help - give me a shout.

Anne.

P.S. I'm a bit biased for Stirling.  Not only because I live there, but because it's pretty much central for everywhere and only half an hour from Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Thanks Anne, you will be on the list  :)

I think we could all have an interesting and fun time!

Any special free access/cheap entry for Stirling heritage places?

Stirling does have a lot going for it, especially because accommodation would be cheaper than Edinburgh/Glasgow but in easily travelling distance of both.

My family appears to come from many areas of Scotland --- Morayshire (Rafford, Elgin), Lanarkshire (mainly Glasgow and environs) and Stirlingshire (Campsie). I am sure as a I go farther back that I will find additional areas of interest.  Therefore, any central location would be fine or an area with good public transportation.

Besides getting to know other "rootschatters" I am particularly interested in where my relatives lived, occupations and way of life. Would also like to know more about Scottish records online, evaluating and verifying evidence (information). One item that still puzzles me is why my gggg grandmother Julia went from the US to Scotland. All the other relatives went the other direction .....

Thanks for putting this meeting together (and related administrivia issues) and hopefully I will be able to attend.

Had a wee look to see if there were any 'special rates for Stirling heritage type places but it doesn't seem there are, just the usual concessions.

A quick list of places of interest: (which are all on the Bus Tour Route - £7 per day ticket)

Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, Bannockburn Heritage Centre, The Old Town Jail, Smith Art Gallery & Museum, Argyll's Lodging, Stirling Bridge (featured in Braveheart), Church of the Holy Rude with a wonderful old graveyard and not fogetting Stirling Archives. (These are only open Monday - Wednesday though)

Then there's Falkirk - twenty minutes away - Callendar House and the Falkirk Wheel. Callendar House is also the home of Falkirk Archives open Monday - Friday.

I know, I know, I'm sounding like a travel agent here!

Anne

P.S. Hotels, Inns, B & B's by the dozens
