Chatham - Whittaker Street
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 17:55 BST (UK) »
I know that some ancestors of mine lived in Whittaker Street, Chatham (in 1850s) and I have been trying to find out where in Chatham this street was - I don't think it exists anymore. Does anybody have any idea where I can start to look for this please?

Also, a number of men in my family are marked as Mariners in whichever census I look in - again, does anybody have any advice on where I might start looking at any history of seafaring men in Chatham (besides royal naval) so I can find out what they might have been doing.

Any advice gratefully received!
Thanks
Hils

Hi hilsbe
Welcome to Rootschat

There is a Whittaker Street still in Chatham, whether it is the same one or not I am not sure. Looking at a modern map it is just off the A231 and in between the High Street, and Best Street.

Whittaker Street still exists in Chatham.   It's just off the one way System (now 2 way!)
Chatham was a naval town, many of the residents had some connection with the navy or the dockyard.
Mariners may be difficult to trace unless you know the names of the ships they sailed on.
You could try contacting Medway Archives;

P.S. images of Chatham parish registers are available to view online on this site too.

Thank you both so much - I tried Streetmap for Whittaker Street but it didn't come up with one in Chatham, so I assumed that it no longer existed! So glad to hear it does as I can make an expedition there.

Mariners are indeed difficult to trace when all you have is a line on a census return but thanks for the link to that site - I'll have a good look at it.

I too had relatives that lived in Whittaker Street Chatham and I have a print from an OS map of 1898.
If you would like I could email a copy to you.
I am afraid that nothing much is left of the 'Street' now.

Regards

Graham

Graham - that's so kind of you. My ancestors lived there for many years according to the census and I'd love to see a map. I'll pm you
