Thackray in Rotherham, 18th century
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 23:27 BST (UK) »
I am after any info on the Thackray family in the 18th century who I believe may have been from Rotherham.

Rachael Thackray married Thomas Parkin at All Saints church, Rotherham, on 12 Feb 1809.

They are my GGGG Grandparents. I have no info regarding Rachaels ancestry and have simply made the assumption that Rotherham was her hometown. If anyone knows of Thackrays, or has seen mention of them in Parish records around the time, I would be grateful to know.

Cheers

Mark

Mark,
Thomas and Rachael are my grt, grt, grt Uncle & Aunt - Thomas' Brother Joseph is my direct forebear. I wondered if you have managed to find any other info. re.the family? I amparticularly  keen to learn anything about Thomas's Father (I believe that he was also Thomas but would like to confirm this.
I don't know if you are aware, but Rachael's husband Thomas was murdered whilst carrying out his duties as a gamekeeper on the Wharncliffe Estate. I have some details of the incident as recorded at the time.
I also have quite a bit of the family tree on your (Thomas & Rachael's) side down through George, Walter and John Barnes PARKIN.
Please contact me if you wish, I would love to learn more of the family history.
Kindest regards,                                    theluddite

Hi

Yes, i know about the death of thomas and have found articles in newspapers at the time. It has also been covered in a book called "Round and About Grenoside".

I only have Thomas' father from an IGI entry that may be the christening of Thomas in Wortley. Although it does state his father as Thomas, I cannot be certain this is the correct entry. However, I am interested in knowing the evidence of Joseph's relationship to Thomas as it appears I had no siblings for Thomas.

I have a newspaper record of the murderers trial where a Joseph Parkin was a witness although I did not know what the relationship was. Joesph was with Thomas when he was shot.

If you want, I can send you both the transcipt I made plus photocopies of the original articles. If you could give me any more details regarding Joesph and documentation that links him to Thomas, I would be grateful.

Cheers

Mark
