Hi Deb,

Here's a few of my brick walls:

1.  I am looking for the birth of George RODGMAN/RODGMENT in Instow, Devon c. 1808.  His father is definitely Richard RODGMAN/RODGMENT bap. 19 Sep 1790 in Bideford, and his mother is Mary ??, born c. 1816 in Abbotsham, Devon.

2.  George RODGMAN was married twice.  I have all the particulars (including certificate) for his second marriage to Mary Ann HEAL, but I cannot find his first marriage to Mary ??.

3.  George and Mary ?? had the following children (according to various census records)
Anne 1836
George 1841
James 1844
Henry 1846
William 1849
Gertrud(e) 1852
Charles 1855

I am looking for other children born before Anne.

4.  Since George remarried in 1867, I am looking for a death of Mary RODGMAN/RODGMENT between 1855 and 1867.  It is not the Mary RODGMAN who died in 1874, age 96 as I have her death certificate, and she is the Mary who was married to George's father Richard RODGMAN/RODGMENT.

There are other variants that I found on the census records.  The surname has also been recorded as RIDGMAN and ROGERMAN.

If you're wondering why I am concentrating so strongly on my maternal side of the family, it is because a genealogy author in Australia who is writing a book about how to trace your family in the very old, old records, wants to use my RODGMAN research as an example.  Once I get back beyong parish records, he is going to lead me through the process of searching behind them.

So, any assistance you can give me would be very much appreciated, and I will, of course, share with you his wisdom on going way back to find your ancestors.

But you still haven't told me what family or families you are researching.  I have at least four other surnames in Devon that I am looking for, as well, as some in Somerset and Wiltshire, both of which ended up in Wales before coming to Canada.  If I have information that might help you, I'd be happy to contribute it.

Regards,

Nancy Frey

Hi Deb,

Thanks for the info.  I do have just about all the Census records for many branches of this family.  It is from these records that I have figured out who is related to whom.

What I really need now are things that aren't on the IGI as I have all the information that's been transcribed.  I know that they are adding all the time, so I just keep going back to look again.

I'll keep my eye open for Penfold people when I'm searching. Were they always in Devon, or did they move from County to County as well?

I sure wish I had your discipline about housework.  My place is always a mess!

Get back to me if you ever get any more info, as your access to Ancestry is a great resource.

Regards,

Nancy Frey

okay ...No house has been done as I am driving myself nuts trying to figure out who mary was (that married george , 1st wife ) >:(

I was just looking in the 1861 census and I cannot see a Gertrude ?!(daughter of george and mary) .  Also just wanted to find out if you knew that in 1861 a grandson is living with George and Mary ... his name was William H Shorney age 1.

BTW my Penfolds started in wiltshire and moved to devon and the Cornwall...

Travellers = Penfold, Orchard, James
Devon = Middleton,  Waterfield, Adams, Clark/e, Gould

Hi Deb,

You're right!  That's what the marriage certificate says.  It also says she is a widow and does not give her father's name.

As I said before, we should continue this conversation via eMail.  Please eMail me at Moderator Comment: email address removed to prevent spam and other abuses. Please use the secure personal message system to share email addresses and other personal material. Thank You and I will send you copies of the certificates where her name is cited differently.
