Hello Elaine,

I have a number of Conquers in my family.

My great grandmother was a Daisy Ada May Conquer, born December 1904 in Tottenham, London. She married Thomas Charles Hardy in 1939.

Her father was Frank Edwin Conquer, who died in the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918. He was born in 1882 in Tottenham. Lastly, his father was a Benjamin J Conquer, born in 1838 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

This is as far back as I have with my Conquer line. Does any of my info match yours? Perhaps there is a link somewhere. I have heard rumours that the name Conquer was french and my Conquers may have been derived from Hugenots, but I'm unsure.

Reply soon. :)

Hello Helen

I’ve just come off the IGI at www.familysearch.org.uk

A quick search finds ‘your’ Benjamin Josiah Conquer born on 28 Apr 1835 and christened on 29 Jul 1838, Hemelhempstead, Hertford, England.

His birth entry identifies that he was born to a Benjamin Conquer and his wife Sarah (no surname given).

Whilst on that page , I clicked on the batch no.  On the next page, entered the fathers name only and came up with the following children born to the couple, all born Hemelhempstead.

1.   Benjamin Josiah Conquer  b.  28 Apr 1835
2.   Sarah Matilda Conquer ch. 24 Feb 1842
3.   Emily Conquer ch.  31 Jan 1845
4.   Adeline Mary Conquer  ch.  26 Feb 1847

I didn’t click on the individual girls records, so perhaps birth entries are given on the individual page.

With that info I then did a marriage search for a Benjamin Conquer – England-wide between 1825 and 1835 – and only came up with one.

Benjamin Conquer m. Sarah Linsterd Stephens on 05 Oct 1828 at Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, England.

Another search - England-wide for a birth of a Benjamin Conquer between 1770 and 1810 , only brings up one - born to a John Conquer and his wife Sarah (no surname), on 30 March 1804 ch27 may 1804 in hemelhempstead, Hertford, England.  All these entries are 'extracted' which means they are taken from official records and no 'submitted' entires which are sometimes wishful thinking.  This would make him 24 on marriage.  Looking for a Sarah Stephens - will be a different matters as there are a few hundred in the timeframe - you'll have to trawl through a list.   Although on marriage she has a middle name - she may not have had one at birth.

An IGI search brings up 3 children to the couple - all born Hemel Hempstead

1.  Benjamin Conquer b.  30 Mar 1804   ch.   27 May 1804
2.  Mary Ann Conquer b.  19 Feb 1807  ch.  29 Mar 1807
3.  Matilda Conquer    b. 05 April 1809  ch 30 Apr  1809

Good luck.

Regards,   Steve    :O)

You're so lucky with the unique names.............

1.  There are two tree owners on GenesReunited who have this family - a Colin and Norman
2.  On rootsweb there appears to be a descendant - but not with as much info as yours?
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=denniscrane&id=I455
3.  Further searches to get some supportings docs - from 1837 onwards - can be found at:

Steve,

Thank you ever so much! Coincidently, just after I made that post I went onto familysearch too and had a look for Benjamin. I did find him, and also him, his wife and children living in london in the 1881 census, but i hadn't been too sure about how to find his parents and siblings. Thank you so much for your help! :) Wonderful!

:)
with regards to the unusuality of the name, it does help indeed. :D and thank you also for the link to that other tree. i will make contact with them, we are obviously related, although they have nothing past Frank, my great-great grandfather.

Cheers!
Helen  ;D

Hello Helen,

I'll leave this thread for now.  Hopefully you should have received the pm - if not click the link at the top of the page, showing how to search for siblings on the IGI.

Also., If you go to the 'free bmd' link, - enter 'deaths' and only Conquer in the Surname box, only  Dec 1837 in the left from to box then press enter - you come up with a list of Conquer deaths - Englandwide from that date.  Several are in Hemel Hempstead.

Good luck.  Regards,  Steve .

Hi all,
my name is Shane Conquer living in Australia. I decend from Benjamin listed in this thread. I'm trying to find my family  prior to Richard Conquer (1755-1806) married to Hannah Rogers.
I believe his father was John Conquer married to Elizabeth but I have no birth date or country. any help will be great.

Shane.

Hello Elaine

A few years since your post: I have started collecting information on Conquers mainly from Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland. Please let me know of any of that might help.

sidsmith: You have mentioned my Grandparents, James and Christina, my dad was born in 1938 and, looking at the names and places in your post it looks very likely that my mum is in the line you mention.

Cheers
John
