John Fraser of Inverness
« on: Thursday 21 September 06 19:23 BST (UK) »
John Fraser was an agent for the Bank of Scotland at Inverness. He married Helen Grant, of whom I know (of think I know) quite a bit. They had a large family, including:
Anne Faser, b 1830
Isabella Fraser, b abt 1818
John Fraser, b 1818; m Charlotte Augusta Mackie 1845
These three emigrated to Canada in 1845-6 and lived in St. Thomas Ont. He was a minister. The girls married in Canada.
Hope to find out something about John Fraser (father), as well as the other siblings. Also cannot find info on Isabella's birth.

Sources consulted:
1851 and 1881 census of Ontario
Scotlands People
"Ancestors and Descendents of Alpin Grant" (gives a lot of detail, but I have no idea if it is authoritative or not)

I got what little I have from an old book, that I'm not sure I trust. I haven't been able to find a thing on Isabella, but she did end up living next door to my Ann Fraser in St. Thomas in Canada, so I do believe they are relatives. And I think she was in that little old book. John Fraser was definitely Ann's brother, a minister of the church who emigrated to Canada. He married my great-grandparents.

I too have quite a bit on the Grants, but John Fraser is a brick wall for me -- there are thousands of John Frasers in Inverness. Which line are you from?  I can give you what I know of Anne and John's family.

Another snippet from a book on the history of St Thomas Ontario:
"In 1849 the Reverend John Fraser, a native of Inverness, came to St. Thomas.... He is a brother of Mrs VanBuskirk (nee Ann Fraser, by great-grandmother) and of Mrs Rally (Isabella Fraser) wife of the Reverend W. Rally..." (p 108)

Rev. John Fraser, was married with Charlotte Augusta Mackie, daugther of Alexander Mackie (1775-1859) and Elizabeth Stuart. They came from Aberdeen, with 8 siblings and settled in Chatham. Oldest daugther, Agnes was my gggg-mother, married with Colin Elder from Skye. Charlotte lived some years at Colin Elder s house.

Another daugther, Alexina, was married with Rev. Peter Keay.

Elizabeth Stuart was  daugther of Elizabeth Elder, a sister of my gggggg-father, Colin Elder Senior (1740-1826)

Very interesting. John Fraser came to Canada with two of his two younger sisters (one being my great grandmother), and I always wondered what brought him here. I guess his wife's family had already emigrated.

My records show that John and Charlotte married in 1845 in Scotland, and emigrated almost immediately, as the first child was born in 1846 in Canada West.

Any info on John Fraser?

Yes, this is what I already have. Where I am able to verify the data, it seems to be pretty accurate. But there are several children listed about whom I can find nothing at all, and one or two listed in Parish recos who are not on the list.

John Fraser and Helen Grant had around 16 chuldren, but many died in infancy or died unmarried, and only a few had chidren.

Thanks

Unfortunately, John Fraser Sr is not under my line of investigation, but I found some reference that could be useful for your research.  In the following link, some details of a transaction involving to John Fraser, representing Bank of Scotland. A company is mentioned, Campbell, Fraser and Co. Is there some relation?
