FreeREG - is it up and running yet?
« on: Thursday 28 October 04 18:59 BST (UK) »
Did FreeReg ever get going?  I check out their page every now and then and it hasn't been updated since 2000 - or am I just not linking to the correct page (freereg.rootsweb.com)?

Thanks

FreeREG is part of the FreeCEN & FreeBMD projects.

The following page is showing that it was last updated 5th October 2004:
http://freereg.rootsweb.com/parishes/index.htm

Volunteer coordinators and transcribers are needed for all 3 of the FreeCEN / REG / BMD sites.

The more volunteers there are transcribing, the quicker the data will be available for FREE to all...

Thanks for the link.  I should have been more specific.  When I go to the search the database option on the homepage it still says that the database is being tested, so it doesn't seem as though there are as yet any records available for search.

Not sure when it'll be up and running, but I look in on the site every now and again. The last update was 16 August 2004, so it would appear to still be maintained. It does say:

"pages now active, but searches are not yet active whilst the database is being developed and tested"

Looking at the status, there would also appear to be several parishes already available - using Carmarthenshire as an example:

http://freereg.rootsweb.com/parishes/cmn/status.htm

It does say though that the site will only inform you WHERE the records/registers are kept and will not be a transcript of them.

The last information I had was that they are working on the final stages of getting the system ready. (servers etc)

The biggest problem is getting volunteers to transcribe the records, so whilst some areas will be well covered other will not.

As the Kent coordinator I know there is a large portion of the county as yet untouched.

There have been several posts regarding this subject.

News regarding the project can be viewed at http://freeukgen.rootsweb.com/

The very latest news I have (not on site) is that initial tests are due just after Xmas, all being well the planned general release will be as scheduled i.e. before April 2005.
