Fensom and Burton
« on: Tuesday 17 February 04 14:34 GMT (UK) »
I'm chasing info on my grandfather William's family - his father was Arthur John Fensom born 1878-1880, and his mother was Jane Sarah Burton born 15 Jan 1880 at 17 Wood St, Princes Road, Lambeth.

William's brother Stanley Thomas Fensom was born 6 Apr 1905 in Plaistow, Westham, London.  We believe that William was born there too, but have been unable to find evidence of his birth to date.  His date of birth was given on his marriage and death certificates as 5 Mar 1909.

The family moved to Brisbane, Australia, probably arriving between 1911 and 1914.

We know that Jane had sisters in England named Florence and Maud, and a brother named William Burton who married a Kate and had at least one child, a boy named Peter.

I look forward to any and all discussion on the names, whether relevant to my research or not!

Thanks!

Hello

Sorry this topic seems to have been missed.  Are you still looking for this information?

If so do you have any further information to add that you've found in the meantime?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do have further info.

I finally found my grandfather William's birth.  He was registered as William Charles FENSON [with an N] instead of FENSOM.  He had always insisted that he didn't have a middle name, and he had always celebrated his birthday on the 5th Mar, although his BC says he was born 7 Mar 1909.  The parents names are correct, and the place of birth is given as Mile End Old Town North Eastern, London, England.

The BC for his sister Doris, who was born after the family arrived in Australia, says that at the time of her birth their parents had previous issue of Stanley 12 years, William 8 years, 2 males deceased  and 5 females deceased.  I also found one daughter born after her, who did not survive.

This is the whole family as they appear in my records at the moment:

Arthur John Fensom (b.1877;d.1922)
   sp: Jane Sarah Burton (b.1880;m.1899;b.1953)
Child  1: Jane Caroline Fensom (b.1900;d.1900)
      Child  2: Arthur William J Fensom (b.1901;d.1901)
Child  3: Ivy Florence Fensom (b.1903;d.1917)
Child  4: Maud Caroline Fensom (b.1904;d.1917)
Child  5: Stanley Thomas Fensom (b.1905)
Child  6: Unknown Male Fensom (d.1917)
Child  7: William Charles Fenson (b.1909;d.1964)
      Child  8: Gladys V Fenson (b.1911;d.1917)
Child  9: Florence Mary Ann Fensom (d.1915)
Child 10: Doris Muriel Fensom (b.1917;b.1993)
Child 11: May Edith Fensom (d.1919)

My thanks for drawing my attention back to Rootschat, and for taking the time to read my query!

Hi Donny

Not sure if you're still looking for this family but there is a possibility of a family with the name Frensham in West Ham on the 1901 census.  Arthur 31 , wife Sarah Jane 26 and children Jane C 4 and Rose L 2.

Unsure if they're yours, but if you'd like the info let us know.

Thanks, Biker, I'd really appreciate it.  I won't know if they're my lot until I see the data.  Looks promising, though.  Might explain the reference to Rose in a family letter, too!

Thanks heaps.

Hi, cossy - if Auntie Dolly was your grandmother, then you're my second cousin.  My mother is Fay, daughter of William Fensom.  I used to visit Auntie Dolly and Uncle George in Toowong on a fairly regular basis [hated that back yard], but I only remember visiting them once after they moved.  I attended both their funerals with Mum, so I've probably laid eyes on you even if I didn't know where you fitted in!

I don't have *any* of Auntie Dolly's and Uncle George's grandchildren listed.  I'd appreciate it if you could provide those details?  You're welcome to all my research, including scanned copies of certificates, etc.  Email me at Email removed by Moderator to prevent spamming - please use the PM system to exchange such information - Thanks! and I'll send the lot to you.

Did you know that you have other cousins through Stanley?  It seems that most of the younger family members were unaware that he had children before he married Auntie Prue.  If you're interested, I have all those details, too, and contact details for the various family members as well.

Is 'Georgie Smith' George Victor Smith Jr, born 1943, buried 2nd December 1946 with Grandma and Grandpa Fensom?

Oh, and I have our Fensom line back to 1811 in Luton.  I also have an on-line gene group for Fensom researchers.

Hope I hear from you soon!

Donny
