family in Fiji
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hi folks
My great grandparents went to and lived and worked in Fiji for a few years. We have postcards that were sent from there. We are still not exactly sure what they did there.
The sad bit is that I think that 3 of their children were born there and that some of them died there and are buried there.
The parents were Harry/henry Stevenson and Harriett,
the children who are I thinking about were:
Sarah b1885, Loloma b1886 (I know she is buried in Fiji), Cecil b1887 and Harriet b1889.
How can I check out records from Fiji?
Any help much appreciated. Thanks.
Mary

You could try this web address: it's the National Archives of Fiji:

http://www.fiji.gov.fj/publish/page_3516.shtml
Scott, Dowdeswell (Merthyr Tydfil), Jones (Loughor and Merthyr Vale), Roberts (Nelson), Prichard (Collenna and Cefn Fforest); Evan Roberts (Corwen and Amlwch); Scott (Pentre); Scott (Ancrum); Thomas (Pantywaun and Bedlinog); Morgan Jones (Ystradfellte); Bowen (Loughor); Jenkins (Bridgend); Thomas Dowdeswell (b. Gloucester, 1829).

Hi

How about posting somewhere like the RootsWeb/Ancestry message boards.

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.oceania.fiji.general

You might not get a quick response - it's the sort of place where a message might come out of the blue months later, but you may be lucky.

:)

Just visited the site, and great news, there is a thread running about grave sites and a lass who has some names of the folk buried there. So I've tagged on to the thread! Maybe we'll find out something soon.
thanks again

Hi folks
no joy yet. The lass gave me instructions for finding the appropriate records on the LDS site, tried them and couldn't work it out, so I emailed the site and they gave me instructions too, but again I couldn't get what I was looking for.
I must be thick ???
But not that thick!   :)
can anyone help me please..............................
Mary

I'm sorry the lass didn't find your Stevensons - she runs the Pacific Islands Interests group of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, so would know where to look.

I know my way around the IGI on LDS, but anywhere else on that site confuses me too! You're lucky to have one of their centres close enough to visit.

Cheers

I had posted this response on another thread where another member is seeking death records for relatives who died in Fiji.

Death records can be found at the National Archives of Fiji as well as the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages. Records found at the BDM office are as follows -

Birth Records : 1877 to Current
Marriage Records : 1871 to Current
Death Records : 1877 to Current

Death records will have cause of death, place of death, death informant, as well as typical details such as the deceased's dob, place of birth and parents names (if known).

The National Archives holds records from 1875 but records prior to this and dating as far back as the 1830s can be found within the Methodist Church records which is a separate section of the Archives.

You may have to ask someone to do a manual search for you in Fiji, although actual records can also be found online.

VALENTINE - New York, USA, Fiji.
