McCabe of Leitrim
« on: Monday 18 September 06 17:21 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am looking for information on a Patrick McCabe, farmer, of Leitrim ( I have no idea of which town). I'm assuming he was born about 1815/20. His son Michael born c.1848 moved to Cheshire and married my GG Grandmother.  The only info I have is what I've written here. How do I find out anything more? Any advice woulod be grand. I've tried Googling and the Leitrim website but I'm not having much luck! Thanks, Pippa.

Hi Pippa:
There is a townland in County Down by the name Leitrim. It is in the Hilltown area. Mc Cabe is also a name found in Down so your man may very well have been from there instead of County Leitrim.
I took a quick look at Ros Davies' wonderful site for Down and found this interesting item.
"Michael McCABE . Drumgooland sponsor at the baptism of Catherine , daughter of james Charleton & Mary McCartan 15 Aug 1875 at Leitrim Catholic Church "

Here is link to the info on Leitrim: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/PLACENAMES/L.htm#Le
Hope this helps some. Good luck,
Pat

There are McCabes in Leitrim. Specifically, there was a Patrick McCabe listed in Griffith's Valuation c 1857 in the townland of Gubadruish in the Civil Parish of Mohill. I suggest you go into the Index for GV at www.failteromhat.com and insert the surname of McCabe and Co. Leitrim. That will show you all McCabes listed in GV for Leitrim. Also, you might want to go into www.Leitrim-Roscommon.com and look for some posts from Jim McCabe whose relatives are from Mohill/Cloone. Contact him - he will probably be very helpful.

I have a g g g father Michael MCabe a farner in  Drumgooland who married Catherine Charlton in Ballymaginaghy and had several children including Mary McCabe in 1854 who moved to Magilligan after she married Neal Deighan
I don't know what happened to Michael, Catherine or their family and don't know where they came from

An update on Michael McCabe of Leitrim Co Down

Michael McCabe married Catherine Charleton  of Leitrim Townlands on 14 / 11 1847
In the 1901 Irish Census they were at house no 33 in Ballymaginity (Leitrim Down) aged 75 and 77 with son Charles 49 and daughter Agnes 35
Of the other children - Mary (Deighan/ Deehan, was in County Derry at Magilligan but I don't yet know what happened to the other children Margaret, Patrick, Eleanor, and Michael)
