1841 census. Elizabeth Buckley
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 19:26 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could someone look up Elizabeth Buckley on the 1841 census please? She was born in Saddleworth in 1838. I know she married in Mottram (Cheshire) in 1858 but don't know at what point she moved there. I would like to trace her before she married to see if her father was Hammond Buckley.

Many thanks.

Thanks very much Claire, that's very helpful. The 'Hammond' was a stab in the dark really. I'd found a Hammond Buckley in an online document who was in the right age bracket to be Elizabeth's father, and knowing that Elizabeth had called her 5th son Hammond (an unusual name) I thought there might be a chance she'd named him after her father. Something I can now rule out!

Thank you again  :D

It may have been the maiden name of her mother, or one of the grandmothers.

Let me know if you want me to look for any more information on them.

Do you have Elizabeth's marriage information?  It should tell you her father's name on there :)

The only information I have on her is that she was born in Saddleworth abt 1838 (information on the 1881 census), that she married Benjamin Addy in 1858 in Mottram and that they had 10 children. Where should I go from here? Should I consider ordering their marriage certificate? If it lists the father's name it should tell me which of the 'Saddleworth 3' was her father, and her mother by extension  :).

Dear J.J. Abbott,

Having strayed onto the RootsChat site , I was amazed to see your enquires about my Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Buckley.

Benjamin Addy was of course my Great Grandfather and Hammond Addy, who I remember very well was my Grandfather. I would strongly suggest that Elizabeth's father could indeed be called Hammond. Hammond being one of our family names. I had a cousin Hammond, now deceased, who was the son of the first son of Hammond (Harry) and I am the son of the second son of Hammond (Benjamin). I am resident in Mottram which is about five miles from Saddleworth. I do hope that you have managed to find Elizabeth's, father. I would be interested to know. If I can be of any assistance to you please don't hesitate to communicate.

With kind regards,

Benjamin Addy.

Dear J.J.Abbott,

Further to my previous message re Elizabeth Buckley. Elizabeths father was in fact called Ammon Buckley, he was a Mason by trade, so it would appear that the Saddleworth families you listed are not connected to Elizabeth. I remember as a young boy my grandfather (Hammond) telling me that one of his relations came from Yorkshire to work on the building of St. Mary's church Greenfield (one of the Saddleworth villages). Presumably Ammon.

Sorry I suggested that "Hammond" might be the name of Elizabeths father, having now looked at a family tree of another family connected with Addys' I discovered there who Elizabeths father was.

Perhaps in all probability you are now in possession of this information, however if and when you have sight of my messages I would be interested to know and indeed hear from you.

With kind regards,

Benjamin Addy.

Hello jjabott,

I have been researching my Buckley roots for some years now.  I have the marriage certificate of my 2nd Great Grandfather John Buckley, his father is recorded as Hammond Buckley, Stonemason. I cannot find John living with Hammond (who also used the name Ammond) in any census record but have found Hammond, a stonemason, living with his family in Dukinfield from 1851. Hammond married Ann Lockwood and they did have a daughter Elizabeth b 1838, she was Christened in Dukinfield and her birth was registered in Stalybridge.

If you don't have this information already, hope my findings help.
