Umbrella Maker

Could anyone tell me where I can find out about the trade of Umbrella Maker, I am looking at a father and son, in the early to mid 1880s, who both worked at this trade.

I'd be interested in this one too - my great grandfather was an umbrella maker and bath-chair proprietor.

This topic also interested me as on the 1861 census my GGgrandmother is listed as a an umbrella maker as was her 16yr old daughter. In 1871 this occupation was extended to include another daughter 14yrs old and a son of 18yrs.

This was in Bethnal Green East London. Could this have been a home based occupation?ß

One of my ancestors ran a toy and book shop but at the same time was an umbrella maker in the 1870s.  There is no indication that he employed other than a couple of other people and so the umbrella making would seem to have been a part time business for sales in his shop.

I had an umbrella maker in my family emigrating from Scotland to USA aged 16 as late as 1924
I wonder if she would have kept doing the same work
Until she married.

How specialised was it as a profession ?
