ALDERMAN, lookup on US census.
« on: Friday 15 September 06 10:14 BST (UK) »
Could some one please lookup the 1840, or 1850, or 1860 US census for the ALDERMAN family, possibly New York State.  Details are as follows:

James ALDERMAN b 1803 Swanbourne Bucks England and his wife,Sarah, b England.  Their children before 1841 were Elizabeth b1824 and Thomas b 1831 both born Swanbourne, Bucks.

They appear to have migrated to the USA before 1841.  In 1860 they could not be contacted at a New York State address by the solicitor settling an estate.

Thank you, Gazania in Australia

Hi Gazania

I have found this information for you to consider

1860 living in Lenox, Madison, New York
Post Office is Wampsville

Jas alderman, age 59, laborer, born England
Sarah, age 60, born England
Sarah, age 21, born NY
George, age 18, born NY
Helen, age 14, born NY

and living in an hotel in Sullivan, Madison, New York, post office - Chittenango

James Alderman, age 27, Ostler?, born England

1850 census living in Lenox, Madison, New York

James and Elizabeth, with Sarah, George, Helen and William, age 7

It shows that James and Sarah, cannot read or write

Also living seperately in Lenox is Thomas, age 16, bn England, Ostler.

Again appears to be living in an hotel.

Also just for your consideration.... on checking for an Elizabeth born 1824 +/-1, living in Lenox, I came up with this

Thomas Parrot, age 27, Carpenter, born England
Elizabeth Parrot, age 25, born England

Now, I have checked the index for 1870 and this family appear to have moved within Madison County to Canastota, could this be the reason they couldn't be located ?

I will check the details

OK, 1870 census shows James age 66 as a day laborer, value of real estate $2000, personal estate $800, born England, both parents are of foreign birth, he cannot read or write and is a US citizen.
Sarah is age 68, keeps house, both parents are of foreign birth and cannot write
Daughter Sarah B, age 30, born NY is a Laundry woman.

Thomas Alderman, age 36 is also living in Canastota, looks like he is single as no other family with him, his occupation makes more sense now, Hostler!

Cannot find the Parrot family in 1870.

Hope this helps

Dear Agnes,

Thank you so much.  For the past 15 years, I doubted that I would ever find anymore about this family.  Thank you again. Gazania

Dear Agnes,

Thanks to you, I have trawled the 'net and have compiled a chart for this family.  The parents, son Thomas and daughter, Sarah, are all buried in the Lenox Cemetery.  Sarah was buried in 1820 and at her death owned , I would think, the family home, 113 Catherine St., Canastota.

I have checked the census at my local Mormons Centre to 1920.  Now I am curious about the marriage and/or deaths of the other children, Elizabeth, Eliza, George, William and Helen, who have all dropped off the census before 1870.  Can you advise me where I look for indexes to these records. Would be at the Courthouse at Wampsville?  The LDS catalogue has no record.  Thank you again, Gazania.

Re: ALDERMAN Annetts Vernham Dean
« Reply #6 on: Tuesday 30 July 24 08:29 BST (UK) »
Hi there
I am researching my family Alderman alias Annetts of Vernham Dean and wondering if anyone knows about when, where or why this happened?

It looks like one Annett was transported because of the 1830 Swing Riots in Vernham Dean but I think this is too late to be an explanation.

I couldn't locate the Alderman one name study sadly....
Any help much appreciated
L

Dear L,
It is many years now since I last searched my alderman family.  I am now vision impaired too.  I used to contribute to the Alderman one name study.  I would think after this length of time the people who organised it are no longer with us.  Perhaps you could Google the Swanbourne famiky history or genealogy .
I do remember a bit about the Alderman Anne’s of Vernham Dean.  As Inremember there was a name change becoming more Annets .  I had no connection with this line of Alderman’s.  Please forgive my typing errors because of my poor eyesight.  Regards
