Is this the Wesleyan training college? If so I would be interested too, as my great grandmother was there in 1871.

Yes - it was built for / by the Methodist church. Your great grandmother must have been one of the earliest students as it was built around 1851. By all accounts it was a grand looking 'campus', set within sight and sound of Big Ben. I'm currently reading a book about it 'The Story of Westminster College 1851-1951' by F. C. Pritchard M.A., Ph. D - published for Westminster College, London by The Epworth Press in 1951. If you live in the UK, see if you can get hold of a copy. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks Fliss. Sounds interesting. I'll look for the book. What sort of training did the college give - was it teachers?

Yes! It was a teacher training college one of the first in England, I believe.

There's a short history of the college, mainly about its later years, on wikipedia at

Hi omegasom

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

According to their profiles, Fliss hasn't been online here since 2010 and jimmymac, February this year.

As long as they haven't changed their email addresses they will receive notifications that we have posted here and hopefully come back soon.
