Looking for Mitchell and Christian
« on: Saturday 09 September 06 16:24 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to trace my wife's relations,Her Grand father was Patrick Mitchell (born 1907) ,her grand mother was Hannah Ellen Christian (born 1906) They lived in Stepney/mile end area . I have found out some info about the Grand mother, But have drawn a blank about the grand father. The name Mary has been mentioned along with John / Jack and Bridget.
Patrick may have come from Ireland (not sure). any information/help would be grateful

Thanks

This might be a good starting point but there are a few others after 1907 so take a look first for yourself but I think this one is good.

Hi,
If you order this it will give you Hannah's parents but if it were me ( you don't mention your mothers name I would start with that ... her birth with both parents and if she was the first born definitely start looking for her parents marriage and that will give you their ages at time of marriage and both their fathers names and occupations and then hopefully you can get onto the 1901 census which with a bit of luck you can be up up and away with your research. When you get more info. let me know and I am only too happy to help.

Hi again
Hannah's side of the family is well under way, Father, Mother and siblings all confirmed.

I am not sure when Patrick and Hannah got married, I do know which year that it was , but it was on Boxing day. (not much to go on). It was in London area as they didn't move out of the area their entire live's.

Hi Pooh Bear

You can search for Hannah and Patrick's marriage (assuming it took place in England or Wales) at http://www.ancestry.co.uk.  Choose the . option and look at years around when you think they may have married.  If they married on Boxing Day then the marriage will have been registered in the December quarter so you will only have to view one page per year instead of all four quarters.  If you find a Patrick MITCHELL then the wife's maiden name will be next to it and you can then look up that surname to make sure the reference numbers and district match.

Finding a marriage entry and then purchasing the approprate certificate will ensure that you are on the right trace as the certificate should have some identifying details ie. fathers names and occupations etc. etc..

Do let us know how you get on.

Hi
Thanks for you help in my quest.
More information has come to light. Patrick and Hannah got married in a register office. Will I be able to trace this type of marriage ?
The other bit of information is that Patrick's Father and Mother  William and Mary ( have names now) did come from Cork in Ireland  around  mid to late 1800's.
What sort of issue's may I encounter if I try to trace further back?

Hi Pooh Bear

Yes, you can trace a registry office marriage through the marriage indexes at http://www.ancestry.co.uk as I mentioned above.  In fact, by finding the reference and purchasing the certificate is the only way to get the details from a registry office marriage unless you know somebody that already has a copy :)

You might encounter problems when you can no longer find your family in English records and have to resort to Irish resources, yes, but you haven't got that far yet ;D

Try having a look for their marriage then "shout" if you get stuck or have any more questions :)
