1851 Hobman
« on: Wednesday 06 September 06 05:10 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find William Hobman (b1847) in the 1851 census. His father was Thomas (a mole catcher in 1861). In 1861 they were stated as being born in Pontefract, although the only other Thomas I have found with a birthdate around 1820 was born in York. This may be the same person and I am hopint the 1851 census will clarify things.
Is anyone able to help?

Hi

Found this family on the 1851.  If this is your family they are transcribed under HOGMAN and not HOBMAN.

Ref HO107/2330/187/30

North Baileygate, Pontefract

Thomas Hogman H 36 Shoemaker Pontefract
Charlotte Wife 39 Tanshelf
Matthew Whitehead son in law U 17 Ag lab
Sarah dau 14 gen serv
Ann 12 dau scholar
Elizabeth dau 10 scholar
Charlotte dau 7 scholar
William son 4
Thomas son 2m

All born in pontefract.

Dont know how Matthew could be son in law if he wasn't married.  Perhaps it should be son instead.  He could be charlottes son and born out of wedlock, unless there is an error and he was married. ????

Thankyou. This will be the correct family - you have filled in a big hole for me. I think Matthew would be Charlotte's brother or nephew as her maiden name was Whitehead.
Can you by any chance find these same people in the 1841 census as the Thomas I have found previously will not be the right one?

I have since found Thomas's family recorded as Hobmen in 1841, however I still cannot find Thomas.
The family were living in Knottingly with Elizabeth Hobman, presumably Thomas's mother. Matthew was recorded as being a "Hobmen".

Hi

Been unable to locate Thomas.  His wife Charlotte and children on the 1841 are with Elizabeth in Knottingley, the one that you have found. did think maybe they weren't married, but found their marriage in 1835. So only thing I can think of is he is transcribed under a different surname.

Got the following family - maybe they are related to Thomas

1841 Ref HO107/1310/10/33/20

Knottingley

Charles Hobman H 30 blacksmith
Mary 30
Sarah 8
William 4
John 2
Ann Sefton 12 F. S.

all born in the county.

I see you have found some marriage information for Thomas & Charlotte. Do you have any other details?

Thanks

Hi,  :D

Just noseying through the posts and thought I'd register my agreement with Janette.  Son-in-law often meant step-son about this time, so I'd go for Matthew being Charlotte's son, perhaps illegitimate or to a previous marriage.

I got nosey in your post when Knottingley came up.  I have a direct line that came from Knottingley/Brotherton and I'm always on the lookout for further info.  I have yet to find the death of my gr-gr-grandmother in the area.  I'm convinced she's there somewhere, but she's proving elusive!!  ;D
