« on: Wednesday 06 September 06 04:01 BST (UK) »
Hello  all
By  the post added by Shanko  as  to what is  on South Australian  Certificates

MARRIAGES

1842-1856

Date and Place of Marriage
Bride and Bridegrooms Names, Ages and Rank
Signatures and Description
Name of Clergyman

What my query is What  does Description mean

Does  it mean  excatly  that!  a description of  the bride  or groom?

Hi Jenn

The South Australian certificates that I have are for 1852 and 1902, both have the column heading of Signature, Description and Residence of Informant, so, it would probably mean who the informant was, ie, Father, Brother, Undertaker etc.

Could we ever be so lucky as to get a description of the people.........happy days

Hi again

Just had a look at a marriage certificate for 1856

Signature and Description of Parties - meaning the bride and groom, whether bachelor, spinster, widow etc.

Hope this is a help for you

Hi Jenn,

FYI .. I also have a SA marriage, a bit later than your request though - 1939 - that has that column titled as "Condition" with a footnote reading:

Under the heading "Condition" state whether Bachelor, Spinster, Widow, Widower or Divorced person.

Cheers, Jo
