Chesterfield Football Player

Hi I am looking for any information on a Chesterfield Football player by the name of EDWIN NEVE, often referred to as Ned Neve or sometimes mispelt as Neave. I know he was born in Prestwich and after playing at Hull moved to Chesterfield. He died when quite young but I do not know how or where.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I found my footballer ancestor on there and it was quite a good site.


I've looked for "Neve" and found that they have him as:

Ned Neve (W-Winger?) from 1906 to 1911 Hull City
                                     from 1912 to 1913 Derby County
                                     from 1914 to 1914 Nottingham Forrest

Could this be him?

If you click on his name, they also have his date of birth as 03/05/1885, born in Prescot, and died 1920. 

He played 102 games for Hull and scored 12 goals, 47 games for Derby and scored 1 goal and 35 games for Notts Forrest and scored 3 goals.

There's also more info on league position etc.

his football career stopped at 1914 which suggests he joined up,hes the only edwin neve who served in ww1,and he didnt resume his football career after the war which could mean he was suffering from the effects of his war service,either wounds or sickness,he would have been demobilised from the army between jan/apr 1919,there could be something in his hometown newspapers about him being wounded,hes a local celeb,i would contact notts forest and ask if they know of any war service,theres a good pal of mine on the armed forces board[monsstar] who does research at kew,his attestation papers will give all his personal details if they survived the blitz,many were destroyed in ww2,mack

Most leagues stopped playing matches during the war period, considered a bit frivolous while others were out fighting the war, so he could have been out on a limb during the war.  Could be one reason to sign up. But not necessarily.

Some footballers did enlist, I'm sure there was at least one regiment that was made up of previous football players, but others did other work until the leagues got going again after the war.  Some footballers continued to play in minor leagues, possibly to keep fit and just be playing, that didn't compromise the bigger leagues that they usually played in.

If you visit National Archives Site www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and look at their WW1 pages, you could find more information.  It sometimes gives where the soldier/airman etc came from.  Might be able to narrow it down from there.

Me again.  I've had a quick nosey on www.1837online.com and they have records for 2 E Neve's:
            
NEVE    E    III - London: (West, Central & North London)    
NEVE    EM     III - London: (West, Central & North London).

Following this up on 1837online, 3 men with surname Neve ( E, EM & R) are mentioned and must have been related as the address given for all of them is  8 Williams Place, Chase Side, Enfield.

www.cwgc.org has 1 E W Neve who died 22/09/1917 and served in London Regiment.

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk has the fellow Mack mentioned earlier:
