Hi Jean,

Thank you for your email.  I know about those people you mentioned but I don't know if they are anything to do with my ancestors, as my William Ellams was married to Mary ?  who was born in Alvanley near Helsby.

I can't help wondering though, I notice you have written bachelor next to William who married Ellen Lightfoot but not the William who married Ellin Handley, that could mean it was a second marriage couldn't it?

I think that it's just the information that was recorded at that time.  You would need to check the image to make sure, but I think that it's more likely it would be recorded if either of the parties had been married before.

Hi Jill,

Short answer is that you won't know if he is the right one, but he is a possibility.  Do you know when your William died?  There is a will on the CRO website for a William Ellams 1844 Helsby, could this possibly be his father?  It might give you some clues....

You can order online at http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/Recordoffice/Wills/Search.htm - I think they are £3.50 a copy plus postage.

Edit: Hmm, now I look it's probably your William - still it might help you with children etc.

Yep,  It is my William.  I already have his Will and have followed up the children mentioned in it and learned a lot about them, but not about William and his wife, Mary.  It gets so frustrating.  I have looked for their births and marriage at the RO, and for their gravestone(s) but no luck.  Still, they'll keep me going through the winter, I'm not one for giving up.  Thank you for your assistance Jean, really kind of you.
