Marriage Look up ELLAMS

I am trying to find the marriage of William Ellams born 1771.  I only know that he was married to someone called Mary.  I don't know exactly where he was born but most of the children were born in Helsby, Cheshire.  Hope you can help.

 There is a marriage indexed at St Mary Gt Budworth dated 10/10/1824 to a Mary Besswick. At first glance it seems a little late to be your William Ellams, but it is the only one. So cannot be sure as their are two William and Mary's together in 1841 census. Yours in Helsby and the others in Runcorn the Runcorn William Ellams seems a more likely candidate for an 1824 wedding.

Looking at the Helsbey 1841 census it shows William as being aged 70/75 and Mary 55/60 with a set of twins aged 4, who were their parents?

The 1841 census does not show relationships so could Mary have been a sister/sister in law or other relative ? The 1851 shows her as a widow,with one of the twins (Joseph) as her grandson.

As Mary does seem quite a bit younger than William, do you think the William + Mary marriage could be a second marriage?

Hi Peter,

Sorry for delay in replying, apart from being away for a few days, I couldn't find your reply, I'm probaby being a little dim here as I only managed to find it through 'search'.  I haven't got the hang of this site yet.

Re William & Mary Ellams: As you said, on 1841 census it shows Joseph 1837.  He is the son of Ellen Ellams (dau. of William & Mary).  He was born illigitimately.  Ellen b. 1817 married 8 years later to John Lockett.

Mary Ellams b.1837 also mentioned on same census is a mystery so far, I can't find anything on her.

I have a copy of William's Will which mentions Mary, his wife. Also a daughter named Mary, but surely it couldn't be Mary 1837 as that would mean wife, Mary, was 55 when pregnant.

I haven't managed to find a William Ellams of Runcorn.

I would dearly love to find siblings of William but no-can-do without his birth or marriage certs.  Is there any way you can help please?

Hi Daisy,

Sorry for delay in replying been away and on return got confused with the use of this site.

I'm beginning to think the same as you, but why is there no reference to his marriage to Mary? 

I have been in touch with other Lightfoot researchers but no one seems to know of William Ellams and Ellen Lightfoot. 

He was getting on a bit if it was a first-time marriage, maybe he was very very fussy.

Hi Peter, 

Yes, we have the same William and Mary Ellams.  I had a glance at your tree and notice you have quite a few Ellamses in it, but just like me, you haven't managed to get beyond William and Mary, they are my main line, and my brick wall at the moment, so if you ever get beyond William and Mary please let me know.

I have quite a few more Ellams names for you to add to your site. Do I log onto your site or what to pass them on?

Hi Liverpool Lass,

Thanks for your email.  I came across Ellams in Liverpool who was born in Ince, Cheshire.  All the christian names were the same as my Ellams but I couldn't find a link.  Do yours include the Orrell lfamily?
