SHERLOCK family, Victoria, Australia
« on: Friday 01 September 06 02:34 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can help me find a George and Catherine SHERLOCK family that were living in Victoria, Australia around the mid 1800s.

George was born about 1819 and died 21.7.1850 (poss in Sth Australia) and Catherine.. well I have nothing on her.

They had a daughter Mary Ann born 14.11.1843 in Melbourne, Vic and I think christened 3.12.1843 St. James, Melbourne, Vic. The family moved to South Australia when she was 7yo. Mary ann married Samuel HARVEY in Black Springs, SA in 1863 and died in Yacka, SA in 1928.

Over the years the surname became recorded as SHEERLOCK, but it definitely is SHERLOCK on Mary Ann's marriage certificate.

I have no idea where these SHERLOCKs came from and whether there were any other branches out there across Aus as I only have Mary Ann's info as a child of George and Catherine..noone else.

Can anyone throw some light on this? Have spoken with Chrissy but no luck there (Thanks Chrissy!) and she suggested I post a message..here it is!

Thanks in advance!

Hi jocer

The NSW indexes have Mary A SHERLOCK being born in 1843 but they also have a William SHEERLOCK being born in 1845. Ref: V18453734 30A/1845.

Also the marriage of George SHEERLOCK & Catherine HYDE at St James Melbourne Ref: V1843747 27C/1843

Early Victorian Church records are often in the NSW indexes as well.

St James is one of the very Early churches in Melbourne, It was moved from it's original position brick by brick to it's current position on King St.

Cheers

Genni

Hi Jo,

There is a George Sheerlock listed on the BISA (Biographical Index of South Australians) who married Catherine Margaret (nee) Stewart. George was born c1819 in England and died 21/7/1850 in Little Para, S.A. ...Arrival into Australia was c1846.
Occ: Farmer, Tanner and Carter and others
Res:Little Para and Religion was C/E.
Catherine was born 1820 in Scotland and died Rem Ws Holmes.
Children: Maryann, William and George and dau.
William was born in Victoria and George in S.A.

Surname for all is spelt Sheerlock and the only Sherlock recorded is for a Matthew who arrived S.A. in 1857 aboard 'Europa.'

Hope this helps,

Magoo

Thanks Magoo,

That really helps a lot!!

Catherine was born 1820 in Scotland and died Rem Ws Holmes.

Does that mean "remarried widow" to Holmes?

Cheers, Jo
