Any suggestions?can't find a relative!!
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 12:32 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,
Any suggestions please ,as I think we have covered everything in our search for our great Aunt Susan Rowe Jordan. She was born in Falmouth in 1855, she was a child prostitute and later witnessed her sisters wedding(her sister was Elizabeth Jane) in 1877. Then the trail goes cold.I cannot find a marriage for her or a death and we have looked extensively over the past couple of years. Maybe she went abroad? We have looked on worldwide sites to no avail. Maybe she went to gaol!! If anyone can help we would be grateful.

Hi Nooshie!

Interesting one this!  :o

Have found her on 1871 Census:-

Thomas Jordan 40 Labourer

Harriet J  Jordan (wife) 37 Brothelkeeper

Susan R  Jordan (daur) 16 Prostitute

Elizabeth Smithers (lodger) 23 Prostitute

Annie Smithers (lodger) 6

Elizabeth A. Hatton (lodger) 23 Prostitute

Living at Market Street Falmouth

Have you managed to track down the family on any other census?

(This was the only one I managed to find Susan on)

Oh, my goodness, I can't believe this entry - mum putting daughter into prostitution and then putting it down as occupation.

They usually said 'Dressmaker'

Never seen an entry like this before. Can't get over it :-X :-X :-X :-X

Kim - think you were a bit shocked as well - have a look at the image - Annie is a Smithers not a Jordan :)

Can't say I'm shocked, but what I find amazing is the neighbours. If you look at the Census image the Jordan household is just one of at least half a dozen brothels all next door to each other in Market Street.

Not really sure what to suggest about Susan.  She may have died (unregistered), she may have married under a false name (possible in view of her past), she may have emigrated, etc etc.

Can't see her parents in 1881 - do we know what happened to them?

It's normally around now that we start to speculate on the real meaning of 'Seamstress' in Census returns ...
