Conroy
« on: Monday 28 August 06 20:47 BST (UK) »
I am looking for baptism details of a John Conroy, born around 1821.
Possibly from Roscommon or Galway.

Only details I have are in English census where he gives his birthplace as 'Ireland'.

Hello BC,

What denomination were the Conroy family?

John was born prior to compulsory civil registration. Non-Roman Catholic marriages were first registered on April 1st, 1845. The registration of births, deaths and all marriages commenced on January 1st.

Thanks for your reply.
His descendents settled in and around Warwickshire and were Catholics.
However, I have drawn a blank as i cannot find John's baptism.

In order to find a baptismal record (if the church records still exist) for John you will need to know where he lived in Ireland (parish if not townland, not just county).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi BC,

What Christian names are in the family?

One of the heraldry websites contains an article on Irish Personal names which says that Nicholas was a popular name in Galway at one time. www.heraldry.ws/info/article09.html

If you should have any luck with this research I am interested in a 'Jane Conroy' born about 1808 in Roscommon who was transported to OZ for vagrancy in 1830. Her father may have been Michael Conroy.
