Hi:

I'm looking for John Smiles age 21, living in Chester Le Street, coalmine worker, probably with wife Elizabeth B. age 20, in the 1901 census.

Also Robert age 52/3 born Pittington, coalminer, with wife Hannah about 15 years younger, possible also living in Chester Le Street.  May have Hannah's daughters Mary Matthews age 20 and Sarah age 17 living with them, born Pelton Fell.

Thanks Karenlee - except one problem, "my" John's parents are Robert and Hannah!  It get's confusing as there were two John's about same age in Chester Le Street.  Any other John's similar age in same area?

I believe this John must be the one who dies two years later, age 23.  My John dies in 1949.

                        Sorry to bother you again (so soon I just sent you a message 10 minutes ago) as I mentioned my ggg grandparents were Andrew Smiles & Ann Dawson could you tell me if the Smiles's of Newcastle were all part of the same clan please.  Do you know if Andrew had any brothers & sisters please although guess work I  have 3 brothers  who although unsure I have Robert born 1799' John 1800' and William 1821 . I am at a bit of a loss as I lost all contact with dads side of the family after moving in & out of the area quite a few times myself once married (mainly due to work) plus dad( John Smiles born 1909 Southwick Durham) died in 1985 . My mother was from Cumbria and when she married dad in the 1950's  my grandparents were no longer around so the only family members she  knew of his brothers & sisters.

PS you wouldn't happen to know if Andrew (1803 Felton) mother's maiden name could of been Crosier as I came across a Robert Crosier Smiles (born Longframlington in 1799 )

There is a burial of a Hannah Smiles , age 44, of Pelton Fell 13 Dec 1889

Sarah Ann Matthews baptised 12 Aug 1883 d/o Joseph and Hannah

burial:  Joseph Matthews, age 37 of Cross Rows, Pelton Fell 17 Apr 1886

The a marriage in 1891 of Robert Smiles and Hannah Matthews (nee Stephenson)

Is this the Smiles family you are talking about?
