We do not know how many children they had. There was William Ponton died aged 18 years, and a Richard junior.  There is also a witness called Harriet Ruth Ponton. A reading of his will may give more details of the children?

The will of Richard Ponting of Foscot, 15 Apr 1715, names only three children, all sons. Richard, Theophilus and John. Here's a brief summary.

Richard was left a farm called Battchellors at South Wraxall

Theophilus got the farm at Norton St Phillip lately bought from Richard Rendall, Jane his wife and others, and any money owed to his father

Richard got the stock and goods at the estate father rented at Foscott

"My loving son" John got his debts to his father, £400 and £20 a year.

Richard, Theophilus and John Whatley of Bradford trustees of a fund to support any children of John.

William Ponton the son of Farmer Rich Ponton and Joan Ponton was buried at Foxcote church 9th March 1708. The oath was given by Richard Ponton junior. This is how the name is spelt in the records. This is confirmed in the memorial states. The date is set as either 1708 or 1709 which would suggest that the memorial was made sometime after his death and they could not remember the exact date.

The date is written as 9 Mar 1708/9 because of the peculiarities of the calendar at that time. Briefly, the official New Year's Day was 25 March but many people used 1 Jan. This burial date was in the period which was in either 1708 or 1709 depending on which system was being used.  Historians and transcribers write the date this way so that the reader can tell which year is intended whichever system was used in the original record. It does not imply that no-one could remember the exact date.  (There is some uncertainty though. It can be hard to work out which system was being used, especially in a small parish where the register might only have one or two entries a year.)

Thanks for that information. In the past I have been to the Somerset Records Office at Taunton. They have some wills and other doc's from the Ponting's but they are difficult to transcribe. I have started with Rich Ponton and come forward so the tree spread and I have a large number of names.
My wife is a Ponting, came from Foxcote to Haydon Farm then Kilmersdon to Chilcompton then Bristol. Her farther was Arthur Ponting son of Arthur William Ponting.
What is your connection to the family. The oldest Ponting surviving is Stanley Ponting of Cirencester my wife Uncle.
I have some photo's of the farm at Haydon and some graves at Wellow.

I don't have a direct connection to the Pontings myself. A friend whose family I've helped research is descended from a Theophilus Ponting Clement of Norton St Philip, born about 1787. The name certainly suggests a connection with the Foxcot Pontings. I think he was a grandson of a Joan Ponting who was a daughter of the Richard Ponting who was a son of the one who died in 1715.

I do have a very indirect link. For much of the 19th century Foxcot Farm seems to have been ocupied by an Edgell family, who were cousins of mine, many times removed. I've no idea how they came to replace the Pontings. Perhaps they were related.

He's not actually a Ponting, Clement is his surname, Ponting his second Christian name.

He was the son of Richard Clement and Hannah, baptised at Norton St Philip in 1787

I think his mother was Hannah Grist from Hemington, married at NSP in 1783

Hi Chris,

Our families are closely linked as Stanley Ponting is my fathers uncle and they have a close relationship today. My grandmother was a Ponting and was Stanley's sister.

Stanley's daughter Ruth lives just around the corner from us. My wife is in contact with her and we have met Stanley. What was your grandmother's name? My wife's father was Arthur Ponting he died a few years ago now. He was Stanley's 1st cousin. We live in Bristol what part of the country are you from. My wife is due to visit Stanley with Ruth before Christmas.

Mary Elizabeth Ponting was my grandmother, I know Ruth very well...she is my godmother. She will be able to fill you in on a lot of family info I live in Somerset where my family are in the Yeovil/Taunton area. Tell Ruth I said hello hehe.
