I wonder if there is anyone still watching this thread - I have only just joined rootchat. My name is Diana Reeves and my great great grandfather was Frederick Ponting, one of Tom Candy Ponting's brothers. We always had a copy of Tom Candy's autobiograhy and it was always my ambition to follow his trail from Illinois to Texas. I did that in 2009 - what an experience - and it would be fantastic to touch base with people who have contributed to this thread. In hope....

Hi Chris

Almost sure this is not the same Frederick - my grandfather married Martha Ponting - their son Frederick John went to Canada, went through the whole WW1 in Royal Canadian Dragoons and then was killed in November 1919 when a bridge collapsed under the train of which he was the fireman.

I do not have the details to hand, but I know I have seen another Frederick Reeves but I seem to remember he married Eliza. What is the Ponting connection in your family?

My wife is a Ponting, Tom Candy was a brother of her Gt Gt Grandfather. We have a copy of his book, which we got from my wife cousin. Ivan Ponting. Her grandfather went to Canada and married at Winnipeg. They returned to England just before the 1st world war. He went with a brother and his future wife brothers aswell. They are the Curtis's and came from Newton St. Loe, near Bath.
I have traced the family back to 1600 at Foxcote, Somerset, then via Kilmersdon, Chilcompton to Bristol.
I have a photo of the memorial that Tom Candy Ponting refers to in his book from Foxcote Church. Fred Reeves was the Postmaster at Chilcompton and he married a Martha Ponting

That is interesting Chris - the Fred you mention is my grandfather. But what really interests me is the Canada story. My father, Walter Percival Reeves, went to Canada and so did his brothers, Joseph and Jack (Frederick John) and they settled in Saskatoon - he is at Reed House (the Post Office) in Chilcompton in the 1911 Census working in the business - so is his brother Joseph but not Jack. I am not sure when he actually went to Canada - I think he is probably the Reeves I have found in the passenger lists in 1913 - he enlisted in the Canadian Dragoons in 1915 in Saskatoon. He went back to Canada after the war and was demobilised and I think he came back permanently to the UK in 1923.

What was the name of your wife's grandfather? I wonder if a number of them went from Chilcompton, not just the Reeves. I went to Moweaqua where Tom Candy Ponting settled - he lived in the Ponting Mansion which looks a bit like a "gone with the wind" southern mansion! I know that one of his nephews, Richard Stone, lived with him and I wondered why my father didn't go to him rather than the colder wastes of Canada. As you know from the autobiography, Tom Candy had been back to visit relatives in the early 1900s.

I went to the church at Foxcote - met a milk lorry on the way so you can imagine. Parked in the farmyard opposite the church but the church was locked. Would like to see the photo you have.

Sorry to take this time to get back to you.
Rich/Richard Ponton and wife Joan Ponton.

The earliest record I have is as follows. I have pictures of the memorial and Foxcote Farm which I think the Pontings built in 1650ish.

William Ponton the son of Farmer Rich Ponton and Joan Ponton was buried at Foxcote church 9th March 1708. The oath was given by Richard Ponton junior. This is how the name is spelt in the records. This is confirmed in the memorial states. The date is set as either 1708 or 1709 which would suggest that the memorial was made sometime after his death and they could not remember the exact date.

We do not know how many children they had. There was William Ponton died aged 18 years, and a Richard junior.  There is also a witness called Harriet Ruth Ponton. A reading of his will may give more details of the children?

The next record is that of a funeral of Robert Smith esq. Who was buried on the 13th May 1714? The oath was given by Joan Ponting. (The name has changed).

In the records there is recorded the burials of Joan Ponting wife of farmer Rich Ponting who made the oath for her. This is recorded as 17th July 1714.

Richard Ponting Farmer buried on 10th June 1715. Joan Biggs made the oath.

The other Richard Ponting at the bottom of the memorial is their grandson.
