Look up help wanted - BLACKMUIR
« on: Thursday 24 August 06 02:00 BST (UK) »
Please forgive me if I have posted my request in the wrong place (newbie to site). If site moderator needs to move my post I understand.

Can anyone help me trace my grandmothers details ;

Elizabeth Blackmuir (m/n) born 1898 possibly in North East England she died in 1955 Hebburn on Tyne County Durham.

She had two sisters that I am aware of  Mary and Totty Blackmuir, and their father was called George Blackmuir who for a time lodged in Carter Ave Hebburn County Durham.

The only other details that I have is that she married Benjamin Ford  1923/24 and for a good few years they lived in Cuthbert Street Hebburn County Durham.
Any help no matter how small the links would be magic for my research............sincere thank you to anyone who can help.............Summer

Summer,

I have written the entries as they appear on the census pages not as they are indexed.
Blackmur in particular gets misindexed and the 1901 census was an opening stumbling block. Plus you had given Blackmuir not Blackmur.
I found the 1924 reference for the marriage on the Ancestry Beta index  and that the surname was Blackmur.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx

and then searched for the birth registration for Elizabeth on FreeBMD so I knew her birth area

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

and then tried again to find the crucial 1901 census entry using Elizabeth Bla* with an age within 5 years of her known age and a birthplace in her case merely the county of Durham and trawled through the possibilities. The asterisk in a search represents letters you are not sure of and is very useful in names that are mispelt and misindexed. The family were indexed as Blacknell which is someway from your original Blackmuir.

Finding Thomason was also not easy as you don't expect to find a marriage indexed for a woman as Thomas (and there were two Thomases indexed to that particular marriage - so which was it - if any)? Pringle again is another surname misindex and harder to spot until you realise it is mostly going to be Pingle. The Pringles were harder than the Blackmurs. William Pringle never gave the same birthplace on any census and neither did Thomason and therefore it helps to have local knowledge of place names when searching which I didn't have, so I was much slower knowing to change from searching from a birthplace of Seaton to a birthplace of Delavel.

To find Thomason's mother's maiden name and search for her on the 1841 census and find her marriage to William, you are probably going to have to get Thomason's birth certificate, or wait for FreeBMD to complete transcribing the marriages for that period.

This shows their coverage so far.

Dear Vada........wow! It would  have taken me years to find out all the links you posted. My grandmothers maiden name spelling was from my late mother.
As it is I have a lovely photo of Elizabeth when she was in hospital a few years before she died, she was beautiful, clear perfect skin, bright sparkly eyes and silver hair......

When her hubby (Benjamin ) re-married after her death, his new wife got rid of lots of the family photos and documents, on that side (shame..) my Aunts and Uncles were not to pleased I can tell you.

So the photo I have of Elizabeth is precious.......

Sincere thank you again, for everything.......Summer x
